My mother has been trying to figure out what kind of insect it is and I figured someone on here might have an idea?

Rhopalidae maybe? I don't know, that's from a random google image search for orange beetle

After lots of exploring on bugguide that Garret suggested, I withdraw my earlier statment and think it looks more like a small milkweed bug.

http://bugguide.net/node/view/460

Or after more looking, perhaps the large milkweed bug. Patterns look a little closer, and it says the nymphs are orange, where as the nymphs for the small milkweed are more redish.

Also (yes, I have way too much time on my hands), the second picture appears to be aphids and unrelated to your first batch.

Tiny wasp lays eggs on (in?) aphids - BugGuide.Net

Interestingly, according to whoever took that picture also found them on milkweed, so they may commonly cohabit the plants. (Extrapolation on my part with that.)

And yes, more searching since I have nothing to do at work. Milkweed aphids: http://bugguide.net/node/view/6167

When ever I shoot a bug I don't know I'll post it on Bug Guide.Net and they will usually ID it for me in a short time..

When you have nothing to do at work, it's more fun to wander around their bug guide and try and identify it yourself

You also learn more that way, which is why I provided a link to bug guide instead of a link to the bug on bug guide.

I appreciate the help and from what I can tell with the information you all provided they are the milkweed bugs and aphids. Thanks garret for the link i'll be using it from now on.
