I think it may depend on the bank and how good their customer service may be.

My cousin had a few hundred dollars taken out for porn site subscriptions and he overdrafted like five times. The overdraft fees were refunded, because it wasn't his fault. That was with Chase.

Then one of my other friends has Bank of America with overdraft protection. Some one had bought about $500 worth of Xbox Live subscriptions on his card. There was a $10 fee for the transfer and they didn't reimburse him for that.

In today's world it's just good knowledge to check your accounts everyday. Even if your PC is completely secure there are other ways to obtain your CC info.

One popular way is to show your ID while making purchases. When they swipe your card, they already have all your card information, the missing piece of the puzzle is your address. Showing your ID provides this to them, and with today's technology, all they probably need is a street address and the rest can be put together with mapping websites.

In almost all merchant agreements (agreements between store and companies like mastercard) it is either highly discouraged to ask for photo ID at the point of sale or against their agreement to deny a sale to you for refusing to provide ID.

I've found discussing this with the "Joes" at the register doesn't get too far. I usually cover up my address, but this isn't fool proof, because they can look up my name on tax records and what not. One day I may muster up the energy to actually make a point of this.
