Lens Prices - 01-03-2012, 11:32 AM

I don't normally complain about prices, however... I've been looking at large telephotos and have say that manufacturers have absolutely priced them out of reach for most photogs, I think. Really out of reach. That is all.

Blame:
1. Devaluation of us$
2. Factory issues in Japan from tsunami, etc
3. Increased demand as more get into photography

I totally agree John, its amazing how much Canon and Nikon want, even the third party lens are outragous.
I am just amazed at some that have several tele primes. Everyonce in a while you can find a beater 300 2.8 IS for 3k, BUT NOT OFTEN !!!

The 300/2.8 A-mount was $5900, it jumped to $6500 or whatever now thanks to market adjustment for the USD, but it was way up there to begin with. For a "hobbiest" like me it is not even on my list, although I did almost buy a demo unit...

You know, it's funny my Wife has been complaining about my hobby being expensive... and now that she is into her telescope/astronomy hobby, I haven't heard a peep about how expensive my lenses are.

Now that's an expensive hobby too. I was once into astronomy--or tried to be--and was blown away by the prices of telescopes. That obsession didn't last long. LOL

Of course you're right, Ken. It still doesn't take the sting away though. I'll just keep my eye on the used market. Hopefully something will come along.

Still, both the photography and astronomy hobbies are both dwarfed by my previous car hobby.

I'm probably going to rent one when I want it. Renting isn't cheap either, but if I go with a weekly rate and use it every day, it might be worth it.

I have the same lens precisely because I can't/won't pay the kind of money I would have to spend to get a 500L. Doesn't keep me from dreaming about the 200-400L, though.

Same minus the shoes. I had to weigh the latest car in terms of camera gear.
