Feedback on tablets. - 01-04-2012, 01:01 PM

Now that you've had your tablets for a while. Anyone want to speak up about their experiences? Looking to know how you are using it in photography and limitations you have found and recommended workarounds.

I haven't seen any other thread on this, so if there is one, let me know.

Disclaimer: I know this is a dangerous question, but be play nice.

I have the Toshiba Thrive and have been very happy with it. Using it to have some of my favorite work on to show others as well as using an app to tether to my camera and can trigger the shutter using the live view on the pad.

My wife has the Ipad II and it's a really good machine also. I just prefer mine and the fact that I have full size SD card slot and full size USB2.0 connection.

I've been happy with my original iPad until recently. When I upgraded to the latest iTunes, and added new photos with that new version, the photo app on the iPad began crashing every time I used it. An upgrade on the iPad to iOS 5 fixed the crashing, but now everything's slow and laggy. I don't want to upgrade to the iPad 2, since all I do is show clients photos with it. At the same time as all this, my iPhone 4S can not resize 5D2 images that have been imported and optimized by itunes for text messages or emails without mangling the file into an almost unrecognizable mess. I feel like apple has too much on its plate to keep everything stable. I'm hoping future updates will fix these issues.

Thanks for starting this thread! My first-generation iPad is certainly good for some things, but photography is not one of them, so I have been considering other tablets.

I tried an iPad for a day, but found I couldn't search images easily. Just page after page of small pictures of the pictures. I'd prefer a better way to search for a photo, like an alphabetical list. Is that so hard? My photos are usually named by date and place, and searching that way would be best, not looking at pictures.
So if there is another pad out there that has a better search, let me know.

Tom, the ipad does provide an alphabetical listing for the images.

I have a iPad, android tablet and the hp touchpad... they are all nice in their own way.. but after playing with the new i5 based windows tablets, and playing with win8 beta on a laptop... my next tablet is going to be a windows tablet.... I would love the ability to just plug a card reader into it, dump pictures and truely quickly edit images in LR or PS within the tablet if I am on the go...

That said I would like to see the specs of the ipad 3 :)

that would be called folders. The folders themselves are alphabetized but within folders it's anyone's guess.

My son is getting an ASUS tablet this week, spec-wise it looks very promising.

Yeah, at the Apple store they told me a solution to what I wanted would be to make every photo it's own album (folder). A windows based tablets sounds more like it.

I look at mine just as regular folders through file manager app. The pictures in the folder are all in alphabetical order when I originally bring them up. Have you tried any other apps that may be available for looking through your folders? On my Android based phone I also have Astro, and Root explorer which give me more options on how I want to sort files.

I was figuring there should be apps that would manage folders, but I hadn't heard much about them. Thanks for naming names. The one for iPad is called "file manager"?

Based on the feedback thus far, it sounds like the tablets are still evolving and is not quite ready as a part of your workflow, but there is alot of value in showing clients digital proofs. Has anyone collected photos on a tablet (iPad or Android) using wireless attached to the camera?
