IRS Scam Warning - 01-07-2012, 12:39 PM

Please move this if its in the wrong forum.
I recently posted several times in a thread about taxes, primarily because I used to work for the IRS.
I just received an email supposedly from the IRS. This is a PHISH! The IRS NEVER sends out emails except to acknowledge receipt of an electronically filed tax return. NEVER! It is policy that email is too insecure to send tax information and that it taken very seriously by the IRS.
If you ever receive an email from the IRS for any reason other than to acknowledge filing, forward it to:
phishing@irs.gov,
then delete it afterward. Do not open it, no matter how much money they promise you, and delete it. It's a phish.
ndsimm and morech like this.

Everyone knows if they sent a package through UPS. OTOH, not paying attention to correspondence from the IRS can be dangerous and harmful to your future. For those reasons, and others, lots of people would call and ask about an email from the IRS, if it were real and what to do with it. I got those calls and people I worked with did as a matter of routine. People were concerned, and rightfully so.
Don't open one. Just forward it to phishing@irs.gov.
