I've seen a lot worse. Too bad they feel like they have to give it away.

I won't even hazard a guess at that.

Looks like somebody could potentially be on Judge Joe Brown.

It's good to know they're not using Nikon gear with Canon parts... It's 100% Nikon.

Yep, my favorite line from that is "you get what you pay for". So if you're a free client and you read that, I guess your theory is at least you aren't out anything?

That's the main thing I was thinking when I was looking through the site, looks to be a talented guy with proper equipment, so who knows...

I'm not sure he/she isn't business savvy. Most of the threads on here that talk about how to start a business suggest building your portfolio by offering free services for the first few. Once you have two or three under your belt and have something that resembles a portfolio, you can start charging. As you get more experience, you charge more.

As photographers, we can look at his work and say it's fantastic. A bride may not be able to view a great landscape or band performance and think that he'll produce amazing wedding photos.

Doing it for free and advertising 'for free' should probably be different things, though.

I did some 'mostly free' stuff when I started taking pictures for other people. No money up front, but the expectation was that there would be some money changing hands if they liked the results (on spec). I didn't put an ad out for it, though. and I'm not a 'pro', just someone that doesn't want to be bothered by every single person I know asking to come take pictures for them. :)

Maybe it's a misunderstanding of how advertising works. It's ok to advertise free stuff, as long as you are doing it in conjunction with something that is going to promote a revenue stream of some sort.
