Alright, I was called by the Bandera 4-H Horse club to shoot pictures of their Jr. Livestock show because their regular photographer decided there weren't enough contestants to be worth her time. I, on the other hand, jump on ANY opportunity to shoot kids with their horses. It really makes me happy.
Several days ago I went through all my equipment in my gig bag, gave it a good cleaning, formatted memory cards, and charged all my batteries. Did some test shots, determined everything looked crystal clear, and I was happy.
So my game plan for yesterday was to set up my tripod with my 50D and wireless remote in the area where they wanted to take the ribbon pictures and I would hand-hold candids and show activity with my 30D and zoom. Well, the 50D metered with no problem, as usual, I decided to shoot at ISO400 with at f16 because the area where they wanted to do the portraits was in absolute direct sunlight and those setting made the colors of the background really "pop" (ha, ha.) The 30D, on the other hand, WOULD NOT cooperate. The display showed a foggy, copper-toned picture that looked overexposed even when the meter showed the settings as too dark.
I was angry. I ended up swapping the 30D for the 50D because it turned out that I was going to spend more time shooting into the arena than taking portraits then I got happy again, just a little disappointed that my "game plan" fell apart.
However, I find this morning that my 30D was blowing smoke up my skirt. I put the pics on my computer and they look fine. No brassiness, no fog. Just girls and their horses. The light in some of them even looks pretty awesome, but of course the awesome light was on the test shots I was doing out of aggravation trying to figure out what the heck was going on.
So that goes to show that, when you're on a job, anything can happen. I'm glad I had two cams with me because the moms were really talking my "game" when I got there. I thought I had gotten the job via word of mouth, but they had found my website with my Cowgirl Roundup pictures from 2011 and really liked what they saw - so I was under pressure. (Ha, ha. The song by David Bowie/Queen song, Pressure is in my head now.)
On to the "delete the crap and make small proofs" dance so I can make some money!
