I heard on the news the captain just wanted to "swing by and say hi to his friend"

That was some "hi"

for a ship that large to be that close to the rocks @ waters edge anyway... what was the captain trying to do? personally high-five his friends?
the news this morning said that carnival stock is taking a pounding.

That boat seems to have acquired a slight list after this incident.

According to the Dallas Morning News the crew completely botched the reaction to this. Passengers were initially told that the lights went out and there was not a problem. They were not allowed to evacuate until the ship was listing horribly. At that point, passengers had to crawl up passageways on hands and knees because of the tilt, and half of the life boats were unusable because they were underwater. Sounds exactly like the Titanic; it's a shame that nothing was learned from that horrible tragedy.

This is the largest cruise ship to sink, Titanic included. But obviously the loss of life on this was relatively small.

Where the ship is now is not where it struck ground. The reports said that after it hit rocks it sailed a half mile north before turning around and coming in closer to shore. The crew brought it closer to shore after the accident to help save lives. This makes sense to me as a ship that size wouldn't just stop right away after hitting an object. I'm actually surprised it was able to pull a 180 in just a half mile.

A ship like that isn't like the Titanic with just three screws on the back with a rudder. These cruise ships can move completely sideways and can turn very tight because of (props or jets, not sure which) on either side of the boat.
