Selling Ham Equipment on Ebay or Direct - 01-22-2012, 02:19 PM

I would be interested in talking to a member who has some recent experience selling on ebay or directly for some frank discussion about how it works. I have a reasonably expensive piece of used ham radio equipment (~$1400) to sell that is also quite large and I could use some advice. Please PM if you can help. Thanks.

Best recommendations I can make are this (this is how I have my Ebay account set up)
1. Sell ONLY to those within the US (avoids getting scammed by accounts in other countries)

2. Accept only PayPal

3. Bar those that have more than one unpaid item within a month

You can edit these under Site Preferences

I sold some of Dad's old ham equipment last month through the local Ham club. Most of it went pretty quick.

Don, I have a Hygain 3750 transceiver, of which there were only a few hundred ever made, that seems to sell used for $1200-1400, if you have the full kit (transceiver + external 2nd VFO + speaker cabinet). It is a "collector's item" because of its rarity. The issue is that it is very heavy - - it would ship in 2-3 boxes and shipping alone would be $175-200.

I have considered selling it on Ebay, which would probably maximize the amount I would get for it. but they seem to charge you quite a bit for the selling support as well as for each little capability you use... pictures, reserve amounts, buy it now, etc. That's really what I wanted to talk to someone about...

I have not had any contact with a local club here in Houston.. maybe I should look into that... although the likelihood of selling it through a local club would be a function of someone being a collector of this equipment.

So that is really what I am looking to get some advice on... how do I really need to set up my account to sell it? ...Or should I just try to sell it on one do the for sale forums on one of the ham radio forums?

I would contact the local HAM club and advertise it. There is also QTH.com they have a for sale area.

Good Luck
