Here is a link that might help you out for those specifically on the riverwalk.

The River Walk Guide - Dining GuideThe San Antonio River Walk Guide

I've heard really good thing about Texas de Brazil downtown also. Not on the riverwalk (a short walk off of it) but much more upscale.

SA born and raised, and imho, avoid Casa Rio like you would the plague. As a now-displaced native, I tend to recommend eating 'off-Riverwalk' and just walking on the riverwalk.... but when we do, we just peruse the posted menus and take our chances on a spot were we like the atmosphere.

Riverwalk eateries turn over like crazy, so make sure whatever places you see recommended are actually still there....lots of chains have invaded in the recent past, so while they do get you fair eats, the unique-ness is the 1st casualty; therefore a Landry's on the riverwalk is the same stuff as Landry's anywhere else. But the atmosphere is decidely better than say, Landry's in Katy, Tx along IH10.

I personally like Mirador, it is off Riverwalk, not that upscale, but has very good food.

I hate to say it but normally I would not expect "nicer" restaurants in a heavily touristy area.

Normally it's off the beaten path that would yield good results. This isn't specific to SA, just in general.

The only place I really eat down there is the Hard Rock Cafe. At least you know what you're going to get, and the balconies over the walk are fun to sit in.

for steak I like going to Josephine Street Cafe they are very reasonable prices,
for Mexican food, Mi Tierra, or Margarita next door. Its touristy, but great food and you can walk around the market place afterwards

I wish I could help ... we only go down to drink and have some good mexican food. I wouldn't say they are upscale, but they are nice. I10 and 1604 area has some very nice places.

How upscale are you looking for and are you looking to stay specifically around downtown. Silo is really nice, I prefer the original off of Austin Hwy rather than 1604.
