Airline Carry-On Restrictions - 02-17-2012, 10:33 AM

For those travelers that take their camera equipment as a carry-on, it may get tougher and tougher to get your gear on the plane.

Not for nothing, then, are airlines (mostly foreign carriers) limiting the weight of carry-on bags.
Much more strict about this in Europe.

Something to pack in your camera bag: CMBTBM Humvee combat Photo Vest - Black - Medium

A big photo vest. If they make you check it, take every piece of equipment out of it and put it on the vest you are wearing, then make them check the empty bag. They can't limit how much you weigh or what you wear as long as you fit in your seat.

Tom, I also take with me an empty backpack. If there are any problems with weight on my roll-around I divide the weight between them.
But wearing a photo vest is not a bad idea.
Thanks

I have heard of people who successfully used their vest in the past this way.

Part of me also asks if the airline will allow the carry on for a fee. Then it is a money/weight issue, not a safety issue. If they force it to be checked, that is different.

With gas going up again, it's almost time to get a good Pelican case and ship the gear to your destination.

If it was really a weight consideration, why does all 200lbs of me with a 50lb camera bag cost the same as my 95lb sister with a 5lb carry on and a 300lb Michael Moore with a 50lb carry on?

I think it is more money than weight. In some cases it is also weight distribution. When I was in the service, flying to Germany, my duffel bag was like 3lbs over weight. I had to open it and was able to put 3 lbs of weight in my buddies duffel bag and get my clothes back in Frankfurt. That was "following the rules" but was nonsense to me then and now. In the case of people's weight, I suppose they just don't want to mess with it. In the case of carry ons, it is money otherwise there would be a cost per pound to travel and they'd lose every time a kid or small or skinny person flew.

On domestic flights more and more people carry their baggage instead of checking them because the major airlines are charging for checked baggage. So, the carry-ons get heavier and heavier, and the overhead compartments get more bags. To my knowledge Southwest is the only airline that does not charge for bags and they still allow two bags to be checked for free.

I was only looking at the 51 lb weight limit.

I absolutely hate it when I board near the end of the line and I have folks in front of me heading to the back of the jet putting their bags in the overhead as they walk back. They'll comment it looks like the back is running out of space or that it is easier to get it here when they leave. Don't get me started...

Yes, there is more carry on and the airlines should have anticipated that. Perhaps they did, hence this thread.

undoubtedly this is about money. remember how we got in this situation. fuel prices when sky high in 2007/2008 and fees were added. fuel prices subsided, and fees remained in place.

we have a pelican case that we have checked many times before. it also meets the carry on requirements.

I sure the day will come when your ticket price is based on how much you weigh.

Use a ScotteVest and lighten your carry on baggage.
SCOTTEVEST Travel Clothing: Jackets, Vests, Shirts, Pants & More
I have a Scottevest vest and carry iPad and a load of other stuff. Just think of it as a "guy purse".

I've had to gate check my bag on smaller planes because there simply isnt the overhead storage. It's a pain, but with a good case I'm okay with it.
