Id like to get some feedback about the New YOrk Institute of Photography. It seems to be the leading "at home" photography program and with awesome monthly payments im thinking about doing it. Any body have any experience with it? thoughts?

My friend took online classes from a New York photography school, which I'm assuming is this one, but could be wrong if there are multiple. With that said, which ever program she enrolled in, she did not like. One of her main complaints was that the material seemed like it hadn't been updated in forever. I don't know how much of a true complaint that is besides things "look" old because the fundamentals of photography haven't changed. Something taught 40 years ago is still relevant, just the cameras have changed.

Her biggest problem with the program she was in was the critique she got back on photos she submitted. It took forever for them to respond, and was fairly general advice that she did not find helpful.

Like I said, I can't guarantee that this is the same program, but I think you're doing good trying to research the classes before enrolling. My friend paid a *lot* of money for her program which she stopped participating in because she felt it was useless.

I did it. It is not (wasn't anyway) "on-line". You get the lessons (books and tapes/cds/dvds) in the mail and then you do the tests, take the shots, and send them in for evaluation/grading.

When i took it, I learned quite a bit. It gave me a decent foundation. That said, I did all the lessons, but I never got around to doing all the photo assignments (the ones with the models).

Little trick. I sent off for the information and then did nothing. I then got an offer from them a little while later for the course discounted to about $600. That was all about 7 years ago.

I think I got my money's worth from the course personally.

You're right now that you mention it; I think my friend's class was through snail mail. But, it might all be about mind set. If someone thinks that they aren't going to learn something because it's "old", then they'd probably get a lot less out of the information than someone who sees it as a class by people who know a lot more than they do.

May be completely worth it for the OP, but it might take a long time to get any kind of feed back on pictures you send in. Of course, you could always post pictures here and try and get critique too.

yur right i did the same exact thing, they keep up the emails and did discount it to 600 for a one time payment, and like 900 for monthyl payments, still thinking about it and I think i would get the most out of just having someone tell me go shoot exactly this, and then the critisizm that comes from it is great

I took the short course about 5-6 years ago when I was pretty new to photography and feel I got my money's worth. I think it was $250 and you had up to two years to complete it. They sent me test/workbook/CDs every month which I completed and within that time there were two photography assignments you sent in to be critiqued.

The main thing is being consistent to do it, but if you've paid that much money maybe that would make a difference. It took me a year to finish the short course but that was doing it whenever I felt like it.
