Leslie you would like this movie. If I remember right it is a short documentary. I saw it last year at a friend's house. I think it was a bootleg. He had it on DVD but it was unmarked. This guy is always getting cool stuff like this on video. The movie was just heartbreaking. The PJ was from South Africa and like most PJ's he was struggling financially. Winning the Pulitzer was his dream come true. But all the perks and riches that came with it were way too much for the guy to handle- seeing as how he believed that his good fortune was riding on the back of this little girl in the photo. It may be available now somewhere but I am pretty sure that HBO has picked it up. If it is out now on DVD you might be able to find it on ebay. It might also be under the title The Life of Kevin Carter. From what I understand it was realeased under both titles. It was nominated for an Oscar this year but did not win.

I will have to look for it. Actually, I think I've heard of this guy and seen a pic or two of his. He sounds like me...a struggling pj, financially, who's dream is to win a Pulitzer. I watch every documentary and movie that deals with photojournalism. I will have to try and track this one down. I didn't realize it was nominated for an Oscar. Did you see Born Into Brothels? It won the Oscar last year or year b4. Excellent documentary. Shot by a girl that belongs to one of the forums I belong to.

Documentaries about photographers. - 03-17-2006, 09:24 AM

Well since we are on photographer and documentaries. Here are few of my favorites.

War Photographer

W. Eugene Smith - Photography Made Difficult

Reporters De Guerre (a clip from it)

Yes I saw Born Into Brothels and was deeply moved by it. What struck me was the way the kids were resigned to their fate, but how they reacted when handed the cameras. They had a sense of hope. Sometimes that is all you need. And the photos they took were just wonderful. It shows you how a lot of times the art of photography is all about the heart, the desire, and the mind. Great movie.

Here's the web site on "The Death of Kevin Carter." They have a DVD link but it's not out yet.

Thanks John for the links. I have always wanted to see War Photographer. I think I might just order that. I think Nachtwey is the greatest war photographer of our generation, he might be the best ever. So many of his images are powerful but in a weird sense, artful too at the same time. Almost poetic. That may sound strange talking about war photography, but that is my impression of his work.

How about this one. Mahogany starring Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams, and Anthony Perkins. I'll give you three guesses as to the role Anthony Perkins plays. If you guessed demented fashion photographer- you win a cookie!! This has to be one of the worst movies ever made. And you can't help but thinking about "Psycho" everytime Anthony Perkins gets behind a camera. If you can find this somewhere, rent it and have a good laugh.

That was Dan Eldon, who was stoned to death in Mogadishu.

More on his life and the film made by his sister.
