I got to thinking about films in which Photography or a Photographer is an important part of the film. Here are some I came up with start with the classic.

Blow-Up

Frankie's House

A Year of Living Dangerously
Rear Window

I've left out documentaries. What have I missed?

Wasn't "Rear Window" done in one continuous shot or at least the appearance of a linear sequence? Its been so long since I have seen it. Ol' Hitchcock aways broke the rules or rather set them for some when it came to editing

No the continious shoot was not Rear Window, it was about the guys having the party at their apartment and I think it was called The Rope.

Now Rear Window was shot as what could be seen out of an apartment window and in the apartment of a photographer who had broken his leg/hip so was confined to it.

Blow up is probably the top Photographer film.

John Waters, Pecker

Mad Dog and Glory

What is Blow Up? Don't think I ever saw anything with that title.
Blow Out with John Travolta yeah.. but he was a soundman not a photographer

Blow Up was very controversial when it came out, had full frontal female nudity for a short scene where two girls are frolicking in his studio in the nude and they are running between seamless backdrop paper.

The guy goes out to a city park in London and shoots a couple getting amarous in the grass. Well he goes back to his studio and in the darkroom discovers that he has captured what looks like a murder in the background, he blows up the background into these huge grainy pictures trying to tie things together. I also believe this movie has the silent tennis game where a couple of people in mime make up play a fake lawn tennis game.

It has a lot of "60's" underground feal to the movie. I believe that I saw it once back in the 70's saw that it is available on DVD. Not fantastic cinema but entertaining in its own right.

The Travolta thing was a pure rip off just using sound instead.

I just thought of another..
Smoke
and Blue in the Face
both starring Harvey Kietel.. not about photographer per se, but Kietel who owns a tobacco store takes a picture every single day at the very same time outside his store, and had been doing so for many years. It's an integral part of the story really.

The Death of Kevin Carter. A documentary about a young photojournalist who was covering the famine in Sudan. He shot a photo of a young Sudanese girl who was dieing and being stalked by a vulture. Just a few weeks later, he won the Pulitzer. And just a few weeks after that, he committed suicide. This is an extremely heart wrenching film to watch. From what I understand, HBO has picked this up so it may be playing by the summer on HBO. Check it out if you get a chance.

I would like to see that one. I saw another one about a young photojournalist in Somalia I think who was a rising star in the pj world. He was stoned to death while over there with some other pj's. Very sad, incredible photographs.
