Holy Crap! My life flashed before my eyes. - 05-07-2006, 11:05 PM

I was doing a favor for a friend and taking some pictures of him and his fiancee today, when about an hour into the session, I dumped my unzipped camera bag. I had my 70-200, 28-70, and my IR body with my 12-24 hit the concrete from about 8-10 inches off the ground. I checked out all my gear and aside from a few scratches, it all looks okay (seems to work too). Ugh, it was like getting hit in the gut, and of course the whole thing happened in slow motion.

Lessons learned, always check to see if you bag is zipped...even if you've sworn it was.

Well, the 70-200 took the biggest ding. A nice scuff on the tripod collar, the other 2 lenses don't look bad at all, and the D50 shows no signs of the fall at all. It really looks like all the lens hoods provided some dampening, so that's good. I do have insurance and warranties on all the gear anyway, aside from the D50, but I voided that when I installed the IR conversion filter.

Hey at least my D200 and 85mm 1.4 were hanging around my neck at the time of the incident.

Steve,

this happened to me at work. co-worker decided to get into my bag to look at my camera, didn't lock it when she put it back , she walked away and it tipped over....there went my lens....several days later it wouldn't focus anymore...took it back to Best Buy, got a whole new camera + upgrade with a REFUND on the difference. lol

I had my brand new 20D and 24-70 f/2.8L take a fall from a tripod - no damage. I've had my 580ex flashes fall at least once from as much as 8ft - no damage. I know what you mean about slow motion.

Oh, and every time Holly uses my lens or camera body I feel a bit uneasy! LOL

i did the same thing and decided to buy wraps for my lenses. at ten bucks they are well worth it. better to have some padding than just dropping them naked. i feel your pain.

Yikes!!! That just gave me the cold shivers...

Happy to hear all is well. Nikkors are pretty tough (at least the pro line stuff).

Scratches?

Chicks dig scars.

Glad to hear all is well. You should see all of the war wounds on my 80-200 AF-S. I feel better knowing all my gear's insured, but that kind stuff still takes my breath away for a second.

You can tell who the canon L-glass shooters are out there because they only walk on grass or carpet.
