I've heard good things about AVG, although I've never tried it. Never heard much good about McAfee.
25 year in IT and never had a problem with Norton? Really? Are you sure? Buddy, I'm calling Shenanigans!

2004 & 2005 use too many system resources! Symantec has tried to bundle many other software programs into one (Ad-Aware& Spybot) and have them ALL running in the background at the same time.

Yes, you need to uninstall Norton.

AVG at home. Trend at office.

AVG works great and isn't bloatware. I still use the free version of Zone Alarm as well.

I have tried Kapersky and think highly of it as well.

AVG here as well. I love it and you can't beat the free part. I also use Avast on my laptop. www.avast.com. They have a free home version too. It's also really nice. My 2 cts.

I use Avast Anti-virus, its free, and pretty darn effective. Found a worm that Norton had not found on my system.

Thanks for the heads up for NOD32. Last week my computer was acting "funny", I was getting e-mail alerts without the e-mail, my computer would go to 100% resources with nothing running, no task manager, regedit, etc.....
I downloaded the trial version of NOD32 and sure enough it found the W32/Trojandropper virus. Fixed everything!!

..................And I had the paid version of AVG?????

I used Zone Alarm for 6 years, but they started doing the suite thing ala Norton, and upgardes were sometimes a nightmare. I switched to Sunbelt's Kerio and have been very happy with it. I also have a firewall in my router. You can run a hardware firewall along side of a software one, but not two software. In fact, Zone Alarm and Kerio will turn off the XP firewall.

Hey Alan,

I'm just curious, Why do you feel the need to run a software firewall & a hardware firewall?

Sygate personal firewall is free and easy to use and great for small networks. You really have to look around to find the free one tho. I think I got it from cnet.com..

If you want to spend money then NOD32 is the way to go. If you want something free use AVG. Get rid of that bloated, memoryhog of a AV program(talking about norton)...

I have been using McAfee, but hated the way it bogged down the system.

I just downloaded the trial version of NOD32 and my laptop already runs better. Did not find any problems.... which is a good thing.

Also downloaded the free version of Zone Alarm.

Thanks for all the advice!!

With McAfee if you want it to speed up, download the new 5100 scanning engine (still in beta) off of Mcafee's website. It improves it by 50% if not more. At work we HAVE to use mcafee. But this engine is awesome...
