My husband and I are having trouble deciding where in the Hill country to go for our anniversary this year. We've passed through many times but never really had the time to explore the area and find good places.
Basically, we just want to be laid back, maybe do some fishing or rafting and chill out. Of course I will want to take tons of pictures so a beautiful location would be nice. Any suggestions from those of you in the area or those who have a favorite place to go down there?
Thanks

We really liked cabins at Glen Rose on the Paluxy River, but that's probably not far enough into the hill country for what you want on this trip.
Anything around Fredericksburg, I doubt you could go wrong.
Enjoy,

Ditto on Fredericksburg, thats where my wife and I spent our honeymoon, the entire area is just stunning.

My wife and I loved Bandera, south of Kerrville. I think if I had the means, that's the area where I'd settle. We stayed at the Flying A Ranch, which is a wildlife management (read: exotic game hunting) ranch. Happened to get in between hunting parties and had the place to ourselves. Best part was NO TV in the room!

Perfect timing! If you are looking for secluded (which we were) go to Sister Creek Ranch in Sisterdale. It is halfway between Fredericksburg and Boerne. We intended to go into Fred. every night for dinner and only made it once bc we didn't want to leave the ranch! You get an entire first class cabin to yourself... 2 bedrooms and bathrooms, loft, den and kitchenette, screened back porch and huge front porch with a swing and rocking chairs. And there are only two cabins on the whole place! They have a cool saloon where breakfast and drinks are served. No phone or tv which scared us at first but we ended up loving getting away from our jobs! It is located on a Tennessee Walking horse ranch. You can't ride their horses but you get to pet them. They are located on 700 acres. The owners treat you like family. We sat out one night and drank wine with them for a few hours. Down the road on 290 is a restaurant that you CAN'T miss called August E's. It's an upscale steak and sushi joint with lots of great wine. One day we got massages and facials in Fred and on the way out of the Hill Country we shopped in Boerne. There's fishin and TONS of privacy. We would go back any day. http://www.sistercreekranch.com/

It's me again! I love b&bs.
Anyway, in Utopia, TX there is a great lodge called Utopia on the River. It's nestled in the trees along the Sabinal River. Great black granite pool and amazing full breakfast. Lost Maples State Park, Garner State Park, and several small towns like Medina and Bandera are nearby. The rooms are cute and clean but not "first class" and the prices are pretty low. www.utopiaontheriver.com

If you go to sisterdale be sure to go to sister creek winery. It is located in an old gin and could provide some good photo op's as well. The Muscat Cannelli (sp) is very good but I'm biased the grapes came from the vineyard of a good friend.

Something not too pricey or fancy with a river or stream outside where we can just sit back and relax. I'd love to see some waterfalls...(there are NONE where I am at) and clear streams. (Up here all the streams and rivers tend to be red clay and somewhat ugly.)
We just want it to be special since this is our 20th anniversary.
I thought I'd have killed him long before this. LOL
Thanks for the imput ya'll. Keep the suggestions coming please.

We go to Foxfire cabins alot. They have log cabins, but also some nice double trailer type cabins that have awesome views. We stay at one in the Sheperd's Rest (the cabin is called 'Shady Oaks'). It's just a bit past Utopia, in Vanderpool. Lost Maples is just down the road from it. http://www.foxfirecabins.com/
I don't remember this one, it must be new. Looks great tho :) http://www.foxfirecabins.com/propert...eek-lodge.html

You have to check out the Rose Hill Manor. Five star restaurant with cooking classes, remote location, excellent wine selection, 2 miles from Becker Vineyards, private cabins or main house to choose from.... www.rose-hill.com

Try Wimberly! It's an artists' hangout, plenty of rolling hills, shops, restaurants, B&B's, rivers, wildlife, and of course, photo ops!
Kinda makes me wish I had a flatbed scanner so I could dig out some old photos *sigh*

Southwest of Kerville, there is an outdoor resort called Koyote Ranch. We visited there August of '05 and had a wonderful time.
Check out their website at www.koyoteranch.com
I have some photos posted here as well.
If you like wine, then definitely go to Fredericksburg.

If you want to go a different direction, like into the Kiamichi Wilderness of SE Okla, I can highly recommend these cabins. http://www.pinemeadowcabins.com/index.html
I just spent a week-end there shooting pictures for their web site, and as I get them delivered, they will start to appear. Cabin #20 Buckin' Bass are my shots.
Beaver's Bend State Park, and Broken Bow Lake are right across the road. The most wonderful Talimena Scenic Drive is about 30 miles away. This is a wonderful area. The mountains that are this close to Texas will amaze you. Can't say enough good things about the experience.
The people who own and run PMC will treat you like family.
Give Dian a call (tell her Jerry sent you).
