New Chapter In My Life.... - 07-10-2006, 03:11 PM

Something happened today that I thought was never happened. Well thought it might but figured when it did happen I would move to another city. But today, I took another job. For the 1st time in 2 years I went out, applied for a job, interviewd and took a new job, all while on vacation from my current job.

I work for the Wichita Falls Police Department. Have been a dispatch supervisor for the past 1 1/2 years. Love my job, hate the stress and politics that come with it. Along with other issues and events happening, I recently was told that I had high blood pressure. I told my boss this information, but they kept on and on with new work and because of staffing shortages I have been working a lot, 3 days off in June is all the time I had off. But I did as I was told but yet I am slacking on what I am suspose to be doing???

Anyways, It was time for a change. I am taking a job with the local CBS station KAUZ in the control room. Hope to get some cross training and work my way into the news room. Just needed to vent a little. At least now I have some set hours but took a huge pay cut. But its worth it to be healthy, see my kids more then 2 hours a day and get to get out and play photographer once and a while...LOL Thanks for letting me vent.

You gotta do what you gotta do. I know a couple of former police officers who have moved on to other things because of similar issues. I wish you well and look forward to seeing more of your photography.

Good for you, congrats! I did something similar a while back and don't regret it one bit.

Congratulations, and good luck to you!

I've been telling myself for a couple years I need to do that. Maybe one of these days I'll actually start sending out resumes...

Congratulations! It took no small amount of courage to do what you've done and I hope it goes well with you. I'm kind of in the same boat myself. I've been in IT for 25 years (15 of them at my current company). I'm slowly moving into building my own business as a photographer and hopefully in 3-5 years I'll be able to do what you've done - move on.

Good luck and God bless!

Why? You asking me out to dinner? Lol.

Seriously though. I have been doing what I do for the past 17 years in one fashion or another. And I have been at the same firm for over 6 years. And frankly I am bored.

I want to open my own studio in a wharehouse big enough to be able to bring horses in and build sets. But personal enough to shoot portraits and personal projects. And I want a naked receptionist.

[Homer Drool]Mmmmm .... naked receptionist ... aarrrrhhhhhh.[/Homer Drool]

Sounds like a great move. Anything that brings down the stress levels while keeping you on track! Plus, changes are good, they help you see things in different perspectives.

Wow, i think you did the right thing. If the enviroment is stressing you, and now causing health issues, then i don't see anything wrong in what you did. Pay vut or not, Hey you got kiddos. They need you to be there. I too had to do the same thing 8 weeks ago, even though i did not take a pay cut, but still, where i was at before, the stress level was to huge, and now it is not, but the damage is already done. So now i have to take care of myself, and try to manage a better life style than the speedy one i was used to.

I think everyone needs to look, and analyze thier enviroment. If you don't then you will it bay be to late, and you may suffer the consequences.

Regards,

AG

Congrats Huck. I may have to start watching 6 now instead of channel 3. 3 seems to be going downhill lately.

I could sense dissatisfaction in several of your posts. In my experience, when some employers find a worker who puts out 110%, they add to his workload and take from the guy who puts out 80%. You did the right thing for yourself and your family.

Congratulations!!! I know how hard and frieghtning it is to make a career change. I was stuck in a job I hated for over 16 years. All the politics, legal bull, stress and let's not forget the backstabbers trying to climb the corperate ladder made me hate getting up in the morning. I never could get up the nerve to quit and leave the benifits and good pay but one day the company made that choice for me. Now I'm following a dream I've had for over 20 years of being an X-Ray tech. Again congratulations! Lifes to short to spend half your life in a career thats not satisfying.

Congratulations Huck, not sure if the newsroom will be less stressful tho ;) After 22 years in TV newsrooms I would consider moving to Dispatch. Hope it all works out for you.
