Texas and Texans - 04-17-2005, 10:52 AM

I have been arguing with some friends from other places that Texas is as much a state of mind as a place. They have all visited at one point of another, and they have made some generalized comments which I will abstract here. Are these accurate?

1) Texans see pretty sure of themselves, as if its Texas vs the rest of the states.

2) Texans are real polite.

3) Texans do everything big.

4) @%*! state is huge.

5) Is everybody a cowboy? (Only at heart)

6) Is it illegal to pick bluebonnets? (No, its not. It IS illegal to tresspass to pick them, and if picked on the State Right of Way, the state could charge you with Theft, but I have never known it done. I get asked this question 10-20 times during bluebonnet season. I finally had to dig into the books and look, no its not illegal.)

7) Why do north Texans sound different from South Texans?

8) Hispanics in Texas seem to be different from elsewhere in the States. (My wife howled with laughter at this one, she's Hispanic from San Antonio.)

9) Does EVERYONE carry a gun here? NO, but why spoil it.

Comment?

I find this very dependant on what part of the state you are in...In Texarkana it is Texas Vs Arkansas....North Texas....Oklahoma....ect ect.

Wy argue with them. Take pictures of very polite cowboys holding a gun and a bluebonnet and send it to them.

I've been here nine years and like it just the way it is. Keep the stereotype going so they don't ruin it any further.

Of course, that's what the guy in front of me said as I was crossing into Texas for the first time!

Texas vs the rest of the states?
Well, we're the only state that was once it's own country. That counts for a lot in my book.
Unlike most other states, Texas could easily survive on it's own, too.

Anyone have that funny US map that only outlines Texas, and is simply labelled "Texas" and "Not Texas"?

Texas could easily survive on its own. We got power, oil, beach front, lots of farming, cattle.

Texas really is a country of its own really. I love texas and could never leave this place. When I'm texas I feel like I'm at home no matter where I go. Its hard to explain. Example, if you've ever been to south California and then go North you literally feel like your in different planets LOL. Texas isnt like that.

Im Hispanic too and yes they are different than others in the states.

Texans do everything big because we can :). You all should pick up the Texas Brag Book. Its really a great book.

I'd agree with that. I'm not "from" Texas, but I got here as quick as I could. :)

Yep, and I believe we could survive on our own. We'd just have to beef up our northern borders a bit. ;)

2) Texans are real polite.
Yep, that's what I've found out, too. Everybody calls me "sir". Hell, I ain't old enough to be a "sir"! (...but I like the show of respect from everybody here.)

Got to. It's the only way.

4) @%*! state is huge.
As some have said, it's miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles. And yes, contrary to popular belief, there *are* trees in the panhandle. Ya just have to look a little harder for 'em.

As Jerry Jeff says in his song "What I Like About Texas", it's "...the spirit of the people down here who share this land."

Quote:
6) Is it illegal to pick bluebonnets?
Not as long as you don't pick mine! ;)

Down south, they are being invaded by other-staters.

I dunno, ain't been south of Lubbock.....yet.

Why not?

A guy from corpus christi came to my pizza store. We were talking and he mentioned that people are really nice here. That as he was traveling up 77 and 21, everyone he met was kind. He said this is unusual since in CC everyone usually keeps to themselves and couldn't care about anyone else.
I experience this too when I moved to College Station from Mcallen.

Texas Monthly has a good issue on Texas. Its kind of funny in its own way.
