Signal strength is a different issue all together. It depends on how close you are to the nearest tower for your carrier and what obstructions are involved. There could be an issue with your phone as well. Some phone models ahve better reception than others in marginal areas than other phones.
Cell phones are nothing more than fancy portable am/fm radios. You know how your clock radio works better on one side of the room as compared to the other side. Cell phones are the same (basically).
Also keep in mind wireless providers can not provide coverage in all areas. The biggest reason is zoning and local codes restricting towers in the area or the height of the tower. In Houston one of our biggest problems areas in on Memorial drive between 610 and Beltway 8. Its been a problem since 1986 and we can not fix it due to zoning and other restrictions. We wish we could but we are not allowed to fix it. It has improved over the years, but it could be better.
