I contacted a friend at PPA about traveling, in particular abroad since I'm heading to Italy in a couple weeks. As of right now I'm still planning on taking my camera gear and laptop onboard with me. I could live for 10 days with the clothes on my back, but I'd die without my camera!
For those of you interested I thought I'd post his reply...
Electronics Permitted as Carry-on Luggage for U.S. and U.K. Flights
A number of photographers have contacted PPA regarding the new airport security measures taken in the wake of last week’s discovery of a terrorist plot to destroy several transatlantic flights.
Cameras, as well as all other portable electronic devices, are still permitted as carry-on luggage on flights departing from the United States – including those headed to the United Kingdom.
There are, however, some changes in the security screening process to be aware of:
-All passengers must now remove their shoes and place them on the X-ray belt for screening.
-No gels or liquids will be allowed as carry-on luggage. The exceptions are:
-Baby formula or milk when traveling with an infant.
-Prescription medication provided the name on the prescription matches the name of the passenger.
-Certain essential non-prescription medication like insulin.
-It is recommended that passengers place all powdered or solid cosmetics items in their checked baggage.
-The ban on liquids and gels includes food items like yogurt, jello, pudding and all liquids including those purchased after you pass through the security checkpoint.
-Some banned items that you may not have immediately thought about include: gel-filled shoe inserts, baby teethers containing gel,
In addition to the ban on certain materials, the TSA has indicated that it has increased the number of canine patrols and random bag inspections at the boarding gate. All carry-on bags are being hand inspected for flights departing the U.S. and headed to the United Kingdom.
For those departing from the United Kingdom for the United States, a slightly stricter set of rules apply. While the U.K had banned all electronic devices from the aircraft cabin, that ban has been rescinded. If you are on a flight departing the United Kingdom for the United States you are now permitted one carry-on bag measuring no more than 13.5 inches wide x 17.5 inches long x 6.5 in. deep. This bag may contain electronic devices, liquid prescription medications, infant milk or formula, and laptops. Other non-banned items (i.e. non-liquids or gels), are also permitted in the bag, but must be packed in clear plastic bags for ease of inspection.
