FedEx Logic - 08-12-2006, 02:26 PM

In tracking a package that I should have received already I found it interesting the route that FedEx took to deliver something to me.

Date/Time Activity Location
Aug 12, 2006 6:49 AM At local FedEx facility IRVING, TX
4:13 AM At dest sort facility DALLAS, TX
3:33 AM Departed FedEx location MEMPHIS, TN
12:46 AM Arrived at FedEx location MEMPHIS, TN
Aug 11, 2006 9:26 PM At dest sort facility DALLAS, TX
9:11 PM Left origin IRVING, TX
6:27 PM Picked up IRVING, TX
Aug 7, 2006 9:13 AM Package data transmitted to FedEx

Pick up the package in Irving, take it to Dallas, put it on a plane to Memphis, put it back on a plane to Dallas and then drive it back to Irving to deliver to me in Flower Mound some time next week. Now that's what I call effecient service!

LOL. I was told by my postman the other day that I couldn't stamp packages and leave them for the postman. They had to be hand delivered to the Post Office and then stamped with somesort of post office stamp.
I asked why. He said because they need to ask you if there is a bomb in there or not.
I asked him how many bombers have let them know so far...........?

Sounds like a lazy postman rather than a policy... if you have a scale and buy stamps with something like Stamps.com, you should be able to send packages via a pickup... hundreds of thousands of eBay sellers do this every day... you don't think every one of them goes to the post office.

I've had a bunch of stuff go through Memphis with Fedex too...I guess they don't believe in efficiency.

EVERYTHING with FedEx goes thru Memphis, it is their North American sorting facility.

It's darn efficient when you look at the big picture. It may seem a bit odd viewed form the perspective of one package, but trust me, it's been studied by every efficiency expert under the sun for the last 20 years. It's taught in almost every business school and industrial engineering class.

No, they really must accept packages with stamps on them ONLY at a post office if they weigh over a certain amount (i.e., more than a 1st class letter). Now, if they are metered packages, you can easily do click and ship and arrange for the carrier to pick them up and avoid the trip to the Post Office.

I ship out at least 20 packages a week from home for my Ebay sells and have never had a problem yet. Now when I go to the post office they always ask their 20 questions but when I leave them for the postman (guess I should say postperson) they pick them up and send them on their way with no problem. Thats why they offer the service on the U.S Postal website, just click your way through letting them know how many packages you have and when to pickup and your done. Heck I rarely go to the post office, I even get all my boxes, tape and forms delivered to the house.

Back to the FedEx thing though. I had a package I ordered from Tyler which is 60 miles from me got to Dallas then Memphis, then Indiana, then Dallas, then Longview and finally my home. Only reason I didn't drive to Tyler and get it was because I was leaving town the next day. Sounds effecient to me No wonder it cost so much to ship something with all the jet fuel and gas they burned getting a lens hood to me.

I don't care why they route through Memphis, but I will never understand why a monitor I ordered for me neighbor was dropped off 3 blocks away. The FedEx rep agreed that ti was dropped at the wrong address, but never apologized or offered to have it picked up and re-delivered. The address label was correct, just a poor excuse for a driver.

Loony. I accidentally put "28" instead of "58" at the end of my zip code once. I guess UPS didn't have my info in the database, despite being a regular customer. In situations like this, they apparently deliver to whomever is in their database with the closest last name to mine. The package ended up on someone's doorstep about fifteen miles from my house. The only thing that matched between the address on the package and the actual drop-off location was the zip. That's some good logic right there. I had to call UPS and talk to a supervisor to prove to them who I was and that they should tell me where they put my package. Nice.
