Need my web site built - 04-25-2005, 11:28 AM

I just purchased my domain name and a two year substription to a server. I have been trying to build my site using their stuff but it is not coming out as I would like it. I wondered if there was an easier way of doing this. A program that is cheap or maybe somebody does this sort of thing and would like to make me one, note I would like to keep my arms and legs. The site will show my photography and might have the ability to place orders to by prints and so forth. Thanks to anyone who can help a lost kid trying to make something of himself.

I build websites on the side. PM me what kind of site you'd like and we'll talk.

I'm just looking for a site to promote me and my photos, and the ability to sell them and for people to order their prints from me photographying them. I want something set up to where I can easily upload new shots and lots of them at a time in some cases. Thanks for any help.

Clint,
I'll be glad to assist if I can...I did my site in FrontPage and the majority of my pics are stored on smugmug.com which allows me unlimited space to upload and I can set pricing for each gallery and customers can go from my site and order. Let me know if you still need assistance

I use Coppermine on my personal site. One of the add-ons to it is a paypal shopping cart. It is fairly customizable, and can be changed to set the look and feel you want.

Here is one Houston photographer's page using it as a base:

And here is the home page of the project:

Here's the deal, I've already purchased the domain name DefyTimePhotography.com and a two year membership on a server. I need everything on one site, if that's what yall are talking about then great lets do it. I have a pbase site but don't want to link people to it from my site, I want everything on my site. Thanks again for all the help.

ok, so then I guess you mean you want a shopping cart or something similar on your site. If so, is your hosting company providing one or does it have to be built from scratch? If it has to be built, then that may require a little more than I am able to do. How much space did you purchase? does security come with it?

If you haven't looked at it, Coppermine runs on your own site. It uses PHP and MySQL and can even display EXIF info. There are some other free and commerical programs that are similar.

Not trying to shamelessly plug it - but it's free and probably has what you want. Check out the gallery's people post on the forum to see what all you can do with it.

I purchased 4 GB of space and pretty sure I have security. I got it from this company http://infinology.net

They have some web shells for me to choose from, but they don't do what I want them to do.

I'll check out coppermine and see what that is about.

Do you know how what operating system you selected for your hosting? Infinology has both Unix and Windows servers, but if you chose Windows you won't be able to use Coppermine because it doesn't look like they have MySQL support on their Windows platform.

Also, I'm curious about this...I didn't see a 4 GB plan on their site...did you work something special out with them?

It can be a little daunting at first, but follow/read through the documentation on their site (http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/manual.php). I saw one post in the support forum on a quick search where someone using your hosting company had some SQL errors and had to contact their provider for help. I was lucky in that my hosting company has a support forum and other users had already posted the host-specific instructions online.

If you get totally stuck, try the Coppermine forum first and your hosting company support second. The nice thing is if you don't like it, you can always just delete it off.

I don't use any of the built in file transfer routines myself. I find it quicker to create a new directory (have to do a permissions change), upload the files via FTP, then add them through the front end once they are on the site.

Probably took me a couple of days to get everything working smoothly the first time, with lots of returns to the manual and forum for help.[/url]
