I have a horrible cold. - 09-07-2006, 02:39 PM

My 8 year old brought it home and shared. I had to come home from work since I had not slept all night last night with the coughing and sneezing. Anyone got some good home remedies that work?

I am drinking hot tea right now while laying on the sofa. Help!

I can not offer any home remidies, but SLEEP is the key. I've been sick twice this year with flu/cold (who knows) and i slept as much as I could. BAM, back to work in two days.

Oh yeah, a little Nyquil doesn't hurt either.

Sleep, fluids, and medication. The more you keep the symptoms under control the better IMHO. I've had this sinus thing going since the weekend and I'm battling with Tylenol Cold Day & Night formulas to keep the drip out of my throat. That and Cold-Eeze seems to help.

Good luck!

This time of year it is mostly ALLERGIES and not COLDs/Flu that are hitting people. Went down to central Texas last weekend and I saw all sorts of RAGWEED growing near creeks and on unmowed pasture land- I HATE RAGWEED! I was expecting to have gotten all clogged up but I guess they were not pollenating yet.

Recently I've heard the weather folks up here mentioning that there is Pigweed Pollen in the air and yesterday one mentioned Ragweed in the days reading (didn't catch the count).

Contrary to some thoughts but you can become allergic as an adult to some pollens while not suffering any ill effects in previous years.

Welcome to the TRIBE of Ragweed Sufferers, I've been in it for over 30 years!

In my case I'm pretty sure its not allergies. Unless fever, sorethroat, and earache are common symptoms. And the lovely colored phelm of course

I NEVER get sick...........until about 3 weeks ago. Started on a Friday with a scratchy throat then 2 days later my head was pounding. It was so bad I camped out in the Dr's waiting room until either they felt sorry for me or somebody called in and cancelled. Got a Z-pack, a shot in thre arm and a prescription......still took 2 weeks to get better.

Aren't viruses fun?

Careful with the Z-Pack. It's a great antibiotic until all the bugs become immune from everyone using it. Then it's on to the next wonder pill

Lupe says that I do that already. I slept through two phone calls this afternoon that were very important: #1 Telling me the grand jury indicted this sex offender I have been working on for six months, and #2 his lawyer asking when he should turn himself in. Never heard the cell phone ring, and it was less than 3' away. I am doing extra vitamins, fluids, sleep, and hacking up nasty stuff. If Victoria gets it, so do I, 100% guarantee.

Like Scott said, symptomatic relief is where it's at. Keep the nasal passages moist or they won't drain, no matter what you take. Try a vaporizer or stem tent. At this time of year, many homes have very low humidity because of the air conditioning. Same for outside in some places.

Take care.

My only good recommendation is Benadryl for sleeping. And ZPack is such wonderful drug, it's a damn shame I'm allergic to it (I found that out the hard way a few years ago when I had pneumonia--cleared up my pneumonia in 3 days, had hives for the next week)!

Problem with the zpack is that its for bacteria, and unless I screwed up in school, the cold/flu is a virus, not bacterial, thus defeating the purpose of an antibiotic.

I'm in the crowd. I've been doping myself silly on nyquil, dayquil, drops, water, green tea, juice etc for the past couple days.

I've had fantastic luck in the past with nyquil/dayquil...but it is RARE for me to get sick, although I'll occasionally claim to be sick to get out of something .
