BIG FULL MOON: Tonight's full moon is the closest and biggest of 2006.
Why?
The Moon's orbit is lopsided: one side is closer to Earth than the other. When the Moon turns full on Sept 7th, it will be on the close side, making it seem a bit wider than usual. Look for the extra-wide Moon rising in the east at sunset--very pretty.

Maybe soon I will schedule another telescope shoot. I have a different scope than the last time. the new one is 2000 mm. Cant get the full moon in the frame of a 1.6x crop camera. but I have a focal reducer that will allow that.

just need to find a time the moon is up good before 10 PM.

here is a shot with my old (abel's new) D60 and my first scope like my current one.

sorry for the links.....photos are too big to imbed

this shot was taken with the same scope some of the TPF members shot through durning our full moon shoot some time ago

taken with my old D60 and a 1240mm telescope

cool shot James. I saw the moon tonight and took a couple shots handheld with my 80-400. Came out ok I suppose. But nothing like your shot there. Very nice.

Full moon in Houston - 09-08-2006, 07:36 AM

I was driving eastbound on North Braeswood around 8PM and there was a beautiful large orange moon. It was especially nice viewing through the oak trees. By the time it was high enough to shoot from the house, it was the boring old moon color. At 8PM, you wouldn't have needed a zoom, 50mm would have given a nice shot.

The astronomy folks here did a thing on Astrophotography a couple of years ago and they said the full moon is the worse time to try to photograph it. This is because the light is straight on and you don't get any shadows or contrast for showing surface features. It will also wash out other sky objects you may want to shoot.

WHAT!!!!! you could not tell the moon was about 20,000 km closer to us!!!

Just kidding I dont think its possible to detect the the differance. I could be wrong

The Moon's average distance is 384,000 km. However, due to the elliptical nature of the orbit the minimu distance is 363,000 km and is called perigee. The maximum distance is called apogee and is 405,000 km.

I got this the other night when we were leaving from a good dusk climbing session.

The things on there backs are called crash pads. Basically a padded mat to put down so you land on that when you fall. aka. Pad people.
