Did I get scammed? - 10-07-2006, 01:05 AM

Hey, I just have a quick question. I am buying a used 1D body from someone on a forum, and he gave me his home address to send the postal money order to.

Right after I mailed off the money order, I called to give him an update and he told me I messed up, and the money order wouldnt reach his house since I used regular mail....??!

It has been over two and a half weeks now and he claims it never reached him...and that it got lost in the mail..

The post office told me I wasnt allowed to cancel the payment and get my money back, all I could do was file a missing complaint and wait 90 days. Can they see if he cashed it?

any idea what's going on?

If you still have the money order reciept, you should be able to trace it and see if it has been cashed.

Always, when buying anything of value by mail send the payment via registered mail with a return recipt and do not allow a third party signature. It only about 5 dollars and prevents problems like this.

I would NEVER EVER mail anyone a money order or check. I would ALWAYS deal with someone local. If not make SURE they accept paypal. Paypal will refund your money up to 2,000 bucks/ Honestly it does sound like it was a scam.

Sorry but it sounds like you got took. I would trace to see if cashed, but if it has been the only recourse is probably a civil legal action.

Sorry to hear this, if it turns out that you have been scammed, please tell us who it was on the forum so they can be know to all.

Not exactly. I was taken for around 40 bucks, and they would only take what was in the seller's account to pay me back. Only had around 25 in the account. I've never seen the rest. Wasn't a large amount of money, and I knew it was a chance auction when I sent the money. Only time I've been burned by using paypal, am still a big fan.

PM me the info you have on this guy, I'll do a little looking in my databases and might be able to get you some additional info.

Also contact the police - this could be considered mail fraud. Also contact the Postal service police (Postal Inspectors) since it is Federal and has 2 elements for them to get involved with (Postal Money Order, and fraud by mail).

Before we go sending people to the guy's house, has anyone stopped to think he just might be telling the truth? If he has a P.O. Box and there is no delivery route in his area, then the US Mail won't be able to deliver it. Best thing you can do is to contact him again and ask him to explain why the money order won't make it to him. Don't ask him if it's because he only has a POB, make him answer an open ended question. Then follow your instincts as to whether you got scammed or not.

I'm confused? If he has a PO Box then he has a mailing address, now UPS or FedEx can't deliver to that address because it is a US POSTAL SERVICE PO BOX but the POST Office Surely can. Now the guy may have to drive into town to access it but he sure can get to it!

You never said but was this an address in the USA?

Well, I find it interesting that the OP has not yet replied to all the posts. There have been some valid questions that only the OP can answer...
