Both are very good processors, but I think the Intels have the performance edge nowadays with the Core 2 Duo lineup.

I don't think you could go wrong with either. AMD still has good "bang for the buck."

I have always been partial to AMD. Im not a gamer and I dont do multiple image processing (like over 100 photos at a time) so Im still leaning towards the AMD, but like the 4mb L2 cache in the Intel, but the AMD has more L1 cache and a faster FSB.

both of the processors cost about the same at newegg, the cost difference is actually less than 2 bucks.

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but the AMD's respond to overclocking very well. I'm currently running a stock 1.8GHz Opteron 165 (basically an X2) at 2.7GHz with little cooling. If the above doesn't apply, I don't think you can go wrong either way. You might try reading up on tests performed here, here, or here.

Back in my PC days I was always an AMD guy... I wish I could help, but I am far to behind on hardware.... Seems like the only thing I have been looking into lately is hard drives.

I'm running a 165 at 2.4 ghz with only an upgraded fan on the stock heat sink. It runs quite cool but can NOT go any faster no matter what I try. I've researched and found that other people with my stepping cant do any better really Still, you cant be upset about that!

I'm a die hard AMD user, but I voted for the Intel Core2Duo. Right now, that is the best CPU option out there. That's going to change mid-07, but it isn't mid-07 yet.

James,

Toms hardware lets you compare two models of processors and the benchmark. I chose your two procs and PS CS2 - converting 150 photos 9MP to .8MP.

Here's how they compared:

thanks Sonny, I selected a few more testing options and the Intel was faster/better in all that I did. the results are close enough (for my taste anyway) to probablly stick with the AMD. for the system I want to build it will over all be lower cost to support the AMD. the MB and memory are where the biggest cost savings is between the AMD set up and the intel set up. Roughly $250 less to build the AMD system

You can't lose either way you go. The whole Intel vs AMD is an idots arguement. Just like Canon vs Nikon, Chevy vs Ford.....and so on. Both are quality products that will serve you well. It all about preference. Enjoy sir!

My Mopar is still better than your Found On the Road Dead...

When it comes to CPU's I still stick to Intel for their reliability. The only servers we lost in our data room when the air went out over a weekend were the AMD's.

When it comes to the business environment as a support company we've replaced more AMD's with Intel's over the years because of hardware problems. We normally replace Intel's when the clients need to upgrade.

As for the home I wouldn't have a preference and have sold some AMD's (the Opterons) to clients that wanted a computer for the home. They perform well and you can save money buying them.

As to having problems with software running on the new CPU's either AMD or Intel that's a problem with the software and hardware companies problems, not the CPU's.

I just got the 64Bit drivers for my Spyder 2. I hadn't been able to use it since going to XP 64Bit. Everything else works just fine on mine.

I had a really bad experience with AMD's that will keep them from ever getting my money again.... Apparently they corrected the problem, but the sour taste remains.

I do realize that today they are probably both good choices and while one will be ahead one month, the other the next. I'll be sticking with Intel. Much better in the support department.

Sabre just switched from Xeons to Opterons, and since that time, we've had more lock up and rebuilds on Sabre systems. Could just be bad luck.... But my that sour taste returns everytime my freakin pager goes off....
