Networking PC & Mac - 11-08-2006, 09:54 PM

If anyone has a PC and a Mac networked, where each computer can access the other, I could use some guidance on networking mine if possible.

Shouldn't be too big of an issue. I'd do most of the work on the Mac side. You will need to 'share' the windows file systems or folders that you need to access from the Mac. The best place to start is the 'help' system on the Mac. Type in 'Windows share' and the first item that comes up should be titled "Connecting to Windows computers and servers from your Mac". Follow those directions. Then look for the help item "Connecting to a Mac from a Windows computer". The key is to make sure that under system preferences->Sharing that you have Personal File Sharing & Windows Sharing checked.

In the words of Steve Jobs... "It just works".

Thanks, Scott. I now have the Mac connecting to the PC, but it's asking for the password. I'm entering my Windows log-in p/w, but it doesn't like it. Any ideas?

Isn't this tantamount to dogs and cats living together?

Hey, I used to take care of a retriever that lived with four cats.

He was one strange dog...

If it's Windows, I think you should enable the harddrive sharing first.

This is one of the problems on the Windows side. Believe it or not you may have to set a password on your windows account. The Mac doesn't mind null passwords, but sometimes Windows won't cooperate. For the username you should use the account name that you entered when you set the system or user up. The other option is to create a 'guest' account and give that access to the share... My windows box isn't available right now (kids are asleep or I'd fire it up to check for you)...
