I'm sure alot of you have seen the new Dominoes ads for "Brooklyn Style Pizza"? What does the term mean to you? Does anyone think there is good pizza to be had here in Texas (Houston in particular)? If so, what?
On a related subject, you often hear people say "You can't get good X anywhere but Y"?
I grew up in New York, and for me its: Pizza, Bagels, Knishes, Pastrami, Deli Sandwiches, and Diner French Fries with Gravy.
For Philly, its the cheesesteaks.
For Boston, its Lobster Rolls and Clam Chowder.
Do you think there's any truth to this provincialism? If so, what can't you get that's any good except here in Texas? If you were forced to move to, say Iowa, what Texas food would you really miss?

I'm a New Yorker, but I would miss the brisket. Tx brisket has a life of its own....

- Butter Hard Rolls at 7-11
- Herr's Potato Chips
- Frankie's Italian Ice
- Sal's Pizza (mmmm nice & greasy)
I don't know of anything here you can't get somewhere else. :( Probably some kinda meat food.

Definitely the Bar-b-que. It's just not the same anywhere else that I've been!

Santa Maria BBQ tri-tip. I discovered it when I went to UC Santa Barbara. Haven't found another place that makes it as well. Yum....

I never associate pizza with Brooklyn... and I haven't eaten much besides GORP, canned peaches, and Sbisa (cafeteria) food since coming to Texas, so I can't say I would miss any of it.

This may be heresy but I've never really cared for "New York" style pizza, I prefer my pizza crust to be "crusty".
I'm not a huge fan of Texas-style BBQ either; the smoked meats are good but the sauce tastes like ketchup with a bit of spice added in.

I'm from NY.
Best pizza in town is Manhattan Pizza on the west side.
1100 Wilcrest Dr
A close second is Brothers Pizza also on the west side and not to be confused with the Brothers chain.
1029 Hwy 6 N
For bagels you have two choices.
First, there is Hot Bagel Shop on South Shepard in River Oaks. Those are some damn good bagels and they make some great and CHEAP sammiches. Their tuna on a bagel with fixings, a pickle slice and a bag of chips is $2.50.
But the be all end all for bagels in the houston area is farther south in Meyerland.
New York Coffee Shop
9720 Hillcroft St
It's an old school jewish diner with a bagel shop next door. The food is great and cheap. All the favorites like bagels and lochs, eggs and cornbeef hash, potato pancakes, matzo ball soup... mmmmm...... get their early on the weekends because the place is ALWAYS packed.

Oh, and compared to NY, the mexican food in houston rocks, as does the vietnemese and thai. Compared to NY suburbs.

Cincinatti has skyline chili, which is great. I dont know if it is available anywhere else, but a chilidog at a Red's game is awesome.
Thrasher's French Fries are the best fries in the world. I think they are only in Ocean City and Rehoboth Beach.
Also from Rehoboth Beach is Grotto's Pizza - which is my favorite pizza.
The Mexican food in Texas is great. I lived in Georgia for two weeks, and I was crawling up the walls wanting Mexican food. I went to every "mexican" resturant in that god-forsaken place and it was all horrible. How can a Mexican food resturant not have fajitas?
Also, being an Aggie, I have to mention Freebirds. There is one in Santa Barbara, Ca - but other than that it is all Texas.
Of course, in Texas, our barbq is bigger and better than anywhere else.
Louisiana has its cajun food. Birth place of Chef Paul's Turducken and its derivatives.

(I can see the corner of the building from my driveway) My favorite pizza, and I haven't been there in years, is Antonio's on Hillcroft South of Westheimer.

Antonio's Flying Pizza?
Ya, they're up there on my list too. Actually if you see "flying pizza" in the name, odds are good that the pizza will be good. Their other italian food is pretty good too. But they're a bit expensive.

The mexican food down here is pretty good, though I'm having trouble finding good fried ice cream.
The chinese food down here sucks though.

First Things FIRST=GOOD BRISKET DOES NOT NEED SAUCE!!!!! If you gotta glob sauce on it, to eat it, it ain't good brisket! Not saying that sauce doesn't add to a good brisket. Hell if you go into some of the best BBQ places in Texas you have to ask to have sauce added to your plate and it usually is placed to the side, if they automatically dump a ladle of sauce on the meat without you telling them too that ain't going to be good brisket. Go to some of the old German/Czech towns north and west of College Station and North and East of Austin where they have been making great BBQ for 100 years in the same Butcher shop/BBQ Joint.
Also Don't equate TEX-MEX with MEXICAN FOOD, mexican food varies all over the country from roasted goat out below our Big Bend area to fresh seafood along the coast and I'm not talking about "tourist versions of dishes" found in the resorts of Mexico. One thing that we can benefit from in Texas is that we can find restraunts that specialize in regional food styles from Mexico.
As to Brooklyn Style Pizza, never have had it and probably never will. Best Pizza that I had was in ROME for lunch one day, little pizza about the size of a large tortilla with the ingrediants all in their own section on the pie and if memory serves me right it had little tomato sauce on it but it was good. One of the best meals I had was in Genoa and that was a 7 or 8 course meal with a flowing house wine pitcher that ended up with a shot of vodka. MAN I NEED TO GET MY BUTT BACK TO EUROPE!
Heard about a professor who was doing research on what makes certain pizzas different even though most use the same ingrediants pretty much and he guessed that it was the local water that effects the dough. (May also include local microbes that can effect dough)
BTW Pizza Slut makes a pretty good Pizza out at Black Rock City but that is only available for one week a year and their delivery area is only for a 1 mile radius and take out is a pain in the butt. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
