stupid question - 11-14-2006, 06:08 AM

Is there anyplace out there like aaron's or rent-a-center that rents to own lens? That would be perfect for me for getting the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS as I can't afford it outright, and I don't have enought credit to get a card big enough, or enough cards, to pay for it that way.

Not a dumb question at all, and one I'd love to hear an answer. I know Precision rents them out for the day, but I don't think it's toward owning it. Anyone?

Yeah... I've found places on the net that rent... but not rent-to-own.

Here is what I would suggest on the rental front...

Build a relationship with a local shop like LightTec, Dallas Camera, or Arlington Camera. At some point they will have enough trust in you for some sort of arrangement like a layaway/rental. You promise to buy the lens, and they finance it for you. You'll have much more luck that way then getting the lowest price at an Internet shop. JMHO.

Long long ago, I looked into renting a TV, I think it was. By "renting to own", I could pay about four times as much as it was worth. Save your bucks for a year and you'll have more buying power than 4 years of rentals. If they worked this as a loan with exactly the same amount of money and goods changing hands, these folks would all be in jail.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.

You know... rent-a-center is really bad about that. Aaron's not so much though. I paid $2400 for a $2000 tv, and $1000 for an $800 computer.

Why not go with a credit card? Same concept.

Parents, etc.

My credit is LOUSY (due to the fact I have no cards in my name, no vehicles, etc - I lay low due to my job as an investigator). So I had my wife (she kept her maiden name) get a card in her name when I wanted the 20D and accessories. Took awhile to pay off, but we took advantage of a Circuit City no interest for 18 month deal and did it that way. (also got a $200 gift card out of it that helped fund a new TV).

Prior to that my pop got a credit card to fund a motorcycle purchase (this is 15+ years ago), which I paid the bills on. It ended up being cheaper then financing at the bike shop.

Hi Brian, Remember the saying "you can make it if you try?" Was it the Chinese philosopher Confucius or Grover Washington who made that statement? Can't remember. Anyway, I agree with Stephen. Work, save your money, and buy the lens in a year or two.

Another philosopher said "Life is a journey, enjoy the ride." My point: Relax, save some dough and get the lens when you can afford it. Waiting is simply a part of the journey.

Go to Ritz camera on line and apply for their credit plan. All they can say is NO. Sometimes you can never figure out what the computer qualification program parameters are.

Lens aprox $1,700 = saving $16.80 or so a week for 2 years or about $2.33 a day, so just tough it out and save up for it- it will mean more to you in the long run because you know what you had to do to get that lens on the front end.
