You know in my book the problem/reason that people don't use the current dollar coins is that they are too close to the size of a quarter! Looks like they are still stuck on that!
Really increasing the size doesn't increase the cost that much and a coin lasts a lot longer than a paper $1 bill-how often have you seen a dollar bill that was more than 4 or 5 years old?
Now tossing a different PRESIDENT on the face every 3 months is just a way to sell a lot of collectors level coins that will never circulate to numastic folks.
Noticed that they will be doing edge printing again, original reason for doing that sort of work was to assure that the coins were not being trimmed of content-a 1 oz or whatever sized coin had either the correct silver or gold volumne, that is why they later changed to the ridged edges on the dime, quarter, half and whole dollar coins-pennies and nickles didn't have the ridged edges since copper and nickle were cheap metals. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. I still want to know what retard in the government spent money to decide that what I, as a citizen, need is one more damn coin to weigh down my pants?!?!?!
Why not come out with a fifty cent bill? Hell put Fifty Cent's face on it for all I care. Just stop weighing down my drawers.
Prophet out.

I'm waiting for cash to go away all together.
Infact, I think EVERYTHING (cash, credit cards, debit cards, ID, costco card, drivers license) should be consolidated down to one card. When you walk up to the cashier you hand them your card and say "use my amex, please." I can't stand having all this plastic in my wallet, and then the cash on top of it. I agree with Prophet that we do not need more coins. Coins should be the first thing to go. | | | |

The government is trying to push the dollar coin on us because it is cheaper to produce/maintain coin than paper money. And I wish they'd stop spending so much money trying to convince us to get better belts to hold our pants up.

I'm going to let you in on one of the secret truths of life. Its one of those truths that is so simple and so obvious, but apparently so secret that the United States Mint doesn't know it. People don't like to carry coins.
There, its said. Coins are heavy. Coins fall out of your pockets at the ballpark and in the movie theater. Coins are expensive to mail to your grandkids. I think I might speak for many Americans when I say, "To heck with a Dollar Coin.. I want a Paper Quarter.." I know the US Mint wants to circulate these coins because they are cheaper to produce and maintain, but I'm starting to get frustrated watching our government spend all this money in a PR campaign to get us to accept something that we will never accept willingly.. it will have to be forced. They've spent bushels of money on a slick TV ad featuring the voice of Michael Keaton. They've had co-op ad deals with everyone from Wal-Mart to IHOP to circulate the coins. They even got IHOP to rename their Silver Dollar Pancakes to Golden Dollar Pancakes. It doesn't matter how many of these new Golden Dollars they spend, people still are not going to want to carry a pocketful of dollar coins when they can carry lightweight paper bills instead. US Mint: Quit wasting the money as fast as you can print it.

Here's why we keep getting dollar coins when the Fed admits we don't like them.
"Many firms prefer dollar coins for certain kinds of transactions, because coins are easier to handle in large quantities (especially important for transit systems), they reduce transaction time at the cash register (important for small retailers), or they work more efficiently in vending machines. I think that the problem is (as someone has already pointed out in this thread) that people don't want to carry coins. They prefer the convenience of paper money or credit/debit cards. These new coins are nothing more than the government finding a way to make a little extra money off of collectors, etc.

And besides, those crazy Europeans still use coins for big denominations. It's just un-American.
I've never mistaken a Sacajewea dollar for a quarter, primarily because I've never seen one.

Well the older of us here remember the old cartwheel silver dollars in circulation-mostly in Vegas but bunches of old farts would keep one in their pockets just for traditions sake- and a few yung uns will remember 1/2 dollars (have not seen one of those in circulation for ages) so the population did have $1, $2.5 $5 $10 an $20 and even a few $50 coins in circulation for about 200 years or so, people are just getting lazy. Heck if they got rid of the $1 bill and made people carry coins that extra ounce or two over the year may just knock a bit of junk off the old trunk.
I know of many cases that a $1 coin would be better in a vending machine than $1 bills-really how many times have you had to refeed that crumpled $1 into a machine to have it rejected time and again vs how many times have those machines rejected coins?
AS to the newer coins being bronze in color I don't think I have seen more than a handful since they have been released and if a person is BLIND they are pretty much at the mercy of the person that they are handing it too or they can notice that the portrait doesn't feel like a quarters *until they made quarters in so many different configurations.
Now we just need some dollar strikes on quarter planchets to make some rarities.
BTW anyone ever get a mistrike in their change? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
