Film Director Robert Altman Dies

Nov 21, 11:34 AM (ET)

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Robert Altman, the caustic and irreverent satirist behind "MASH,""Nashville" and "The Player" who made a career out of bucking Hollywood management and story conventions, died at a Los Angeles Hospital, his Sandcastle 5 Productions Company said Tuesday. He was 81.

The director died Monday night, Joshua Astrachan, a producer at Altman's Sandcastle 5 Productions in New York City, told The Associated Press.

The cause of death wasn't disclosed. A news release was expected later in the day, Astrachan said.

He will be missed. I alway went to an Altman film because he would take risks.

I think his most underrated and perhaps best was 3 Women.

I had a friend in New York who was a classically trained pianist. He had a part time job as a runner for one of the agencies there. One day, he was supposed to bring some stuff to an apartment, which it turned out belonged to Altman.

Unlike your average hollywood guy, Altman actually noticed the delivery boy, and also noticed him lusting after the beautiful Steinway there. Altman asked him if he played, and then had him play something. I think he said it was Chopin. Then Altman said that he was going away to shoot a movie, and it was a shame that no-one ever played his piano, except maybe at parties, so would my friend like to house-sit for him.

Several months later, my friend was an assistant to Altman and an actor in A Wedding, and worked with Altman on several other films. Everything I've heard about him makes me think he was just a wonderful man.

My personal favorite Altman movie is The Long Goodbye, followed by Nashville and Popeye.

Yeah John, I always thought 3 Women was maybe his best. But he had so many. Duffy, that is a great story. I was always partial to A Wedding as well. As a matter of fact, it was on one of the HBO channels a few weeks back and I watched it again. Such greatness, especially the scene when Mia Farrow's dad finds out that she has pretty much slept with all these different guys- I could not stop laughing.

Or how about one of the most heartbreaking scenes I have ever seen in a movie when Keith Carradine is shot on that bridge in McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

Boy, this is a bummer.

Thanks for posting this Paul. I had the pleasure to work on the film restoration for the DVD release of MASH and working with him on the project. Altman was a very special director and will be missed. MASH was a masterpiece and the only movie that came close to it was Good Morning Vietnam. Rest well my friend.
