Yahoo address? - 11-26-2006, 04:34 PM

I see frequent comments deriding the Yahoo e-mail addresses that some folks use and not being all that netwise nor sending/receiving an inordinate amount of personal e-mails, I'm curious why that is such a bad thing... Other than at work where we have business related e-mails zipping back and forth every day, all day, my home address is a very old Hotmail account that seems to do fine for the minimal (<5 month) e-mailing I do from home and while we have Yahoo available, I use it so little that it's never been worth it to even set up an account.
Again, just curious... Thanks for any enlightenment on the subject.

I have a Yahoo email account that I use for everything. I have never had a problem.

some forums will not let you join with a "free email" account like hotmail, gmail or yahoo. as there is no way to trace the user based on the email address as you can put in bogus info. this is due to a LARGE amount of fraud and spam generated with these types of free email accounts. I have been to some forums that do not allow AOL email address for the same reason.

yahoo and hotmail took off because you could get your email from any computer with internet access. WAY back when I was the first kid on the block with DSL (and even dial up with pdq.net) you could not check your ISP email via the web like many offer today, so hotmail and yahoo took off and with the annominity(sp) it offered, spammers and thieves took advantage of that thus creating a hatred for free email accounts like hotmail and yahoo.

if you want a yahoo account set it up to be your "junk" account for when you need to register on a web site for some silly purpose, this way the spam goes there and not into your regular account.

I have four email accounts (not including the 1,000 I get from my domain host)... my gmail account is my primary; I have two school email accounts, both forwarded to gmail; and I have a Hotmail account, which I use whenever I am forced to provide an email (registration, etc). That account gets a few dozen spam emails a day; I check it maybe once a week just to make sure nothing important got junked.

Steve, people will laugh at spammers and phishers who try to pass themselves off as a big corporation like Walmart and use a Walmart@yahoo.com address. Any major corporation will most likely have their own domain etc. I would expect a legitimate email from Walmart to be something like Marketing@walmart.com not yahoo.com.

In defense of Yahoo email which I've used for a number of years, once your personal filters are set up and your spam criteria become "smart, " very little that you don't want can get through. I've been very satisfied with Yahoo email.

My 2 cents -- and worth every penny of it.

Makes sense although I've not "applied" to be a member of any forums so far that have this restriction nor is spamming my main occupation so I guess I'm clear on that one too.
Thanks for the info... as noted, just curious.
