My daughter has discovered Beethoven - 12-03-2006, 04:17 PM

Victoria has a report due for school and she was assigned Beethoven as her subject. So today she asked me for some Beethoven music, and I gave her the 4th and 5th Symphonies, the Ode to Joy, Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata, and the Eroica. She came in and told me: "Daddy, thats good music". She is so excited, she has been listening to Beethoven all afternoon while working on her report.

Next up is Bach and Mozart.

Cool. All good choices, although I prefer Symphony 7 to 3 or 4. Other good piano sonatas are 8 (Pathetique), 17 (Tempest), and 26 (Les Adieux). The late string quartets are also really good.

You know Mozart gets most of the attention but IMHO Beethoven was a better composer. He's probably my favorite, along with Mahler and Brahms.

I've got a half-decent list of some popular classical music if you're interested. When I used to have my computer in my bedroom, I would always put a few mp3's on to listen to as I fell asleep.

I remember going to test some boom boxes for my dad's office a few years ago. It was in a Best Buy, and there was rap and some rock coming from some of the nearby boxes. I put a CD of the 9th Symphony, first movement in and turned it up a little. People everywhere stopped and turned to listen. Even after 200 years, his music is still revolutionary.

I'd like to know what was in the water in Austria at the time. Within a few years, and in basically the same location, the culture produced Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. It's pretty hard to come up with a higher concentration of greatness in such a limited area and time frame.

I didn't know if you were talking about the composer or the dog.
