These people need some help. Mom is 27 and kid is 12. I guess she had no time to bring him up, and neither does she have any time now, so she picked county to do that for her.
Judgmental I am, I know, but this is pitiful. Should not be in the news, either.

It's pretty pitiful all the way around.
Realistically, though, I doubt they could convict the kid of anything. Assuming the present was addressed to him, you'd have to show that it wasn't legally his at the time he opened it, which would be very difficult, I would think. If you give something to somebody and tell them not to open it, you've still given it to them, and violating a "do not open" instruction wouldn't constitute theft. Mail a letter to the judge that says "Do Not Open Until 2008" and see if it doesn't get opened.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.

You know, I did that once. Opened an Atari cartridge from my Grandmother, played it, and then carefully re-wrapped it and put it back. I got caught (probably got ratted out by a sibling) and my punishment was no Atari for something like 6 months. Taught me a lesson without sending me up the river.

Sounds like it was done out of frustration - not being able to control the boy.
The boy seems to be headed down the wrong road.

crazy insane...
what I find fathomless is that the cops had time for this. The day I brought my son home from the hospital, 2 drugged out nuts broke into my house. God knows what they were going to do - they were eyeing the baby.
The cops didnt respond after call #1, and then after call #3 they still refussed to come inside to see if anything had "really" happened. It wasnt worth their time. How'd they have time for this squibble?

Maybe because Rock Hill, South Carolina is a sprawling metropolis of 50,000 people?

We have around 100,000 people, 2 doughnut shops, and about 17 squad cars...
You'd think they'd be glad they had a real crime to persue. Maybe people in SC like paying taxes or something and have more cop peeps on the streets. Since that event, I've heard multiple complaints of cops not showing up in town. Its kind of freaky. I always thought they would come if I called. False sense of saftey...So I bought a dog at the pound. I went in for a big German Shepard and got this thing...
Okay, I cant find an image...hold on...scary dog soon to appear.
