My Family Update -- for those interested - 12-07-2006, 12:43 PM

ok for those that were at the DFW gtg back in august and those I had the incredible joy of spending time with at Fran's workshop knows that I was dealing with my daughter being very sick. So I thought I would update everyone.

Both my daughter and son, along with my niece and nephew all had surgery on Nov. 16th to remove their tonsils and adenoids. Aside from a little sinus infection that my son has this week (and my bronchitus) the kids are all healthy and doing just great.

All of the kids look better than they have in a while. My daughter no longer has the horrible hallow dark circles under her eyes. my son too. They sleep better, which means I sleep better.

It's been a really long year and this is a good way to end what has been a bad year. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for my kids at this time, they're my world and when others selflessly care about my world, I hope that it puts some good karma in your pocket for when you're having a rainy day.

I wish I would have had my tonsils removed when I was a kid. I'm certain that's what causes me to snore so bad if I'm sleeping on my back. My youngest niece had a lot of trouble sleeping until she got her tonsils removed also.

Torrey, I had mine take out 3 yrs ago when I was 23. I thought I was going to die the pain was horrible. but kids handle it sooo much better, my kids did really well with recover, very little pain.

Thank you Sergio. I think we'll have a much better Christmas with the kids being well instead of sick the way they were before. Thanksgiving was full of ice cream, pudding and other various soft treats. I think my son had an ice cream sandwich for every meal of the day for the last week or so.

So glad to know the kiddos are feeling better Kimberly! We did the same with our daughter several years ago, after fighting numerous ear infections each year... and round after round of antibiotic (which is really not a good thing to keep pouring into a kid.) She was so much healthier once we got that done.

And I can attest to the fact that it's far better to do as a child. I had my tonsils taken out when I was in college and they didn't put me to sleep. It was not a fun experience I can tell you!

I'm glad to hear that they are doing better. I had mine taken out with a little soft pallet work for sleep apnea at age 41. Not much fun. Better to do it when they are younger.

Actually, the most probable reason you snore is due to a weakness in cranial nerve 10, the vagus nerve, that innervates the muscle tone of your pharyngeal structures. In our stressful world, and with our inflammatory diet, your sympathetic nervous system is probably overriding your parasympathetic nervous system. Hence, since the vagus nerve is largely a parasympathetic nerve, this autonomic unbalance leads to loose floppy tissue in the back of your throat that causes you to snore. Not to mention you probably have some sleep apnea that leads to transient periods of hypoxia which only serves to drive the sympathetics even further.

So, yeah, you can have them cut out, and you might even gain some relief, but the truth is there is an underlying problem that your medical doctor will never address, and that will probably have other lasting complications and implications.

Probably already more than you want to know, but if you're interested in hearing more, shoot me a pm.

I have no idea what you just said Robert. lol

My kiddos were all just cronically ill. My daughter will be 2 in Feb. and has spent just about all of 2006 ill. She spent a week in the hospital in Jan with rsv and pneumonia. She again had pneumonia in august (we went the dr. twice a week) she was running 103-104 temp the whole month. We've seen an immunologist who is also an allergist, he's a pediatric specialist he is the one that sent us to the ENT for her adenoids and tonsils.

My niece and nephew had constant strep throat, my son had constant sinus infection. His adenoids were covering 80% of his ear tubes (i have no idea how to spell the technical name for that).

We're just very thankful that they are so much better. I realize they'll still get sick, but hopefully now when they do the meds will work, because like fran said it's not good to keep putting that stuff in the kids. My daughter is 21 months and has been having to adjust to NOT taking meds. If I take something for a headache and she sees me she runs over there and tells me she needs hers.

Thank you all for your good wishes!

WHAT?!?

that is crazy. I've been told after a couple of surgeries that I've had that I woke up during and they had to put me back under (i of course dont remember it).

We did end up spending 3 days after the surgery in the hospital with my daughter, she refused to take the pain meds, so it was fast becoming an issue. Thankfully we were able to catch her possible 3rd pneumonia really before it even started.

I am so through with hospital stays the next stay I take I want it to be in a HOTEL!!! one that does not have eaten almonds all over the floor and one that is not attached to a night club....but those are different stories for another thread!

Yeah, I was just showing off because I'm studying for finals right now, LOL.

So, did your allergist/immunologist ever address your kids diets? Just curious. I know how rough it must be to have your kids chronically sick like that.

well I am impressed!! Finals for what?

I think we may have talked about diets, I know he allergy tested her for several food things, along with dog and cat, because we have one of each.

It's hard for them to be sick like that. Both my son and daughter were sick so neither slept well, so I didnt sleep well so it was just a bad cycle, you know?
