Types of Photography - 05-12-2005, 11:24 AM

OK...I'll admit it, I'm not a "categories" type of person. My music collection is a good example. I have a "genre" in my database but it has become so generic that I don't use it much.

So, my question is, what are all these different types of photography? What separates one from the other. Yes, some are pretty obvious: sports vs. photojournalism. But what really (no offense intended) is a "photojournalistic wedding photo"? Is it the fact that it is not posed and more of a "candid" shot?

What's the difference between a fashion, a glamour, and a boudoir (or however you spell that) portrait? Is it the technique? The amount of flesh that shows? What about an "environmental portrait"? A casual?

These are questions that I always ask myself in preparation when I want to ask someone (or I'm asked) about a specific type of shoot.

Samples and/or pointers to references would be great.

(Notice my questions tend to be philosophical in nature? )

What Kind of Photographer Are you??? - 05-12-2005, 07:57 PM

Jesus,

I'll give this excellent question a "bump" because I'd like to know as well. As it stands now, I know a tad more than squat: not enough to respond to the question.

Maybe, another way to ask it is: What kind of photographer are you primarily (only pick one type as an answer)? Why do you call yourself that kind? What examples of your own photos best illustrate this type of photography? :)

I'm the kind of photographer that strives to get that perfect shot at the release of the shutter. I "see" a shot, often in a unique way. I try to put what I see on film, exactly as I saw it. Might be it's low contrast, maybe sharp as a tack, maybe dark, maybe light, maybe conveying a certain mood. It makes no difference what the subject is.

This desire to record a scene, object, etc., is what drives me. It is also for this reason that I try to use an absolute minimum of software manipulation and alteration. Maybe I'm on a wild goose chase, trying to get the perfect shot. I dunno.

So, what kind of photographer am I? Beats me. I'm not into labels, either.

I'm just guessing on this one, but I would say an example of a "journalistic wedding photo" would be a photo taken at a celebrity wedding for publishing in a newspaper or magazine. The photographer wasn't hired by the couple.

Actually, a photojournalistic style wedding photo has nothing to do with celebrities or publishing in a newspaper or magazine. Basically, it's a style of wedding photography, a lot of the time done in black and white, that has a more photojournalistic feel to it. The photos are more candid, and the angles are very different to your standard wedding-type photos. A lot of the newspaper photogs are doing these types of weddings now, and it's a very big business. I have a friend that was an editor and staff pj for the Dallas Morning News that quit a great newspaper career to just do this type of wedding photography. You can see a sample of his photos and this type of photography at http://www.huynguyen.com/ . Be sure and scroll over the photo on the right, after clicking on images, to click on his name and see his work. He is amazing.

Double wow! His b/w work is amazing. If I were to shoot a wedding that is the exact style I would go for.

Told you his work is good. I used to intern with him at the DMN. He's just as good at photojournalism and a genuinely nice guy.
