Has anyone here taken the photography course from New York Institute of Photography? If so, was it worth the time and money?

Question - 12-17-2006, 09:35 PM

Looked around but have mixed feelings. I already know about how aperture, shutter speed, yadda yadda affect a photo. Guess I am more curious about the aera of composition and posing. I tried to pose a friend of mine the other day and I was lost on everything, I don't know any of the basic posing techniques and that is where I need to learn, how to tell someone to stand, etc. Can the course at NYP help me with this?

I tried it e many moons ago. Early eighties to be exact, forgot most of what I learned. For me, I believe in hands on training. I went to a class sponsored by thephotobinder.com (on this forum) today and learned more in five hours than I did all year.
So you may want to sign up for one of the photo shoots in the workshop forums and see if that helps...

Well. NYIP courses are actually good for people who just begin to learn about photography. I took their courses. I did learn a lot from them so I think it would be the best for the beginner. But if you already have some experience, you could save the money for other learning materials.

I'm currently taking the program, and I like it. I've learned a lot from it. I'm currently on unit four, which covers portrature, and would help you with posing people.

I'm currently taking it, too, and I'm just completing Unit 1. So far, it's just pretty basic stuff that I already mostly knew. The materials are fairly outdated in terms of the examples used, but still seem accurate. Be aware that after you request a catalog and they send you the materials wanting you to register for $999, if you just don't respond they will eventually send you a better offer -- I paid $648 as a lump sum, all-up-front payment. Can't really judge yet whether it's worth it or not.
