In the last couple of years true burlesque has been coming back onto the market, we are talking about girls in scimpy outfits, comedians, maybe a fire breathing act and more and they usually "tour" around a few venues. Now we are not talking about the Suicide Girls which I do not believe do burlesque but actual groups of girls who are a burlesque troop.
Now in the classic history of burlesque from the early teens through the 50's they always made use of photography to market themselves which to me looks to be a ripe market for the taking. These girls generally don't want to go the MM route because they are dancers more than models and I have never come accross a burlesque directed site for the girls to get some good pics from.
It looks like My Space is a place where a lot of them have accounts to advertise their shows and productions but most of the pics that are up that I have come across are not as good as they should be. I mean they look like quick camera phone snaps taken from a show vs a "shoot" done at the club with the girls all lighted and staged appropriately to really give them something to market. Now to be honest they probably wouldn't have deep pockets for this since the burlesque Is a passion and not their 9-5 jobs.
So is burlesque big elsewhere in the state? I know that before Katrina there was a club or two in New Orleans that had old school burlesque shows on at least a weekly basis.
I just saw an ad for a show on the 30th in Dallas by one group-may go and give my self an early Bday present. ( ill try to see if they allow photos or not).
I did attend one show about 2 years ago at the Lizard Lounge that was GREAT! Angela Ryan put it together and Leroy Roper had body painted girls walking around the scene. |
