shuttle pass possible today - Houston - 12-22-2006, 02:51 PM

Keep an eye on the news... if the shuttle goes for the next
Kennedy space center landing opportunity they'll pass South of Houston
at about 4:30PM today (Friday), probably close enough we'll be able to
see and hear something.

Houst is a go for a shuttl epass over - 12-22-2006, 03:42 PM

NASA landing blog says they have been given GO for the deorbit
burn.

Here is a GIF of the landing track. It goes RIGHT OVER HOUSTON.

http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/1...SC203_long.gif

Landing is 5:32PM Eastern time, so they should go over us about
4:30PM Central time.

We don't get very many such chances so go look and listen!!!

North or South of Downtown you think?

Thanks, my balcony should be a perfect view here at the office then.

I have the 70-200 with me today but I doubt that will be long enough

I have seen a re-entry many years ago at about 10:30 PM. It will be something I will never forget. The red glow of the heat shield made it easy to see the shuttle. There was enough light from the moon that you could see the vapor trail across the sky.

I went up to Frisco a few years ago (before the mall, shopping centers, baseball field, hockey arena..............) at night to watch the shuttle fly over and it was amazing. There was an orange streak from one horizon to the other. We hurried home to watch it land in Florida (about a 15 minute drive) and by the time we got home they were already getting ready to unload it.

Local news stations are saying the shuttle will pass over 30 mile north of Houston at 4:16.

Wound up watching Foxnews, the web was 3 mins delayed. Someone at JSC said they could not see the shuttle there, too bright, but heard the sonic booms!
