Exposure for Digital Cameras - 01-03-2007, 10:18 AM

Can anyone suggest a good book? I searched the forum, but just didn't seem to find what I am looking for. I am heading to the bookstore to browse, but thought I would ask for some specific ideas.

Your question is too general.
Are you talking about metering for exposure?
Are you talking about exposure to digital vs film?
Are you talking about general photographic techniques?
etc?

I understand the concepts of shutter speed, f/stops and some exposure. A book that maybe goes over all areas of shooting digital. One that would cover the items you mentioned.

How about Understanding Digital Photography: Techniques for Getting Great Pictures
by Bryan F. Peterson
has anyone read this one?

Haven't read that one yet, but I have seen some good reviews on other forums.
Any book you get that goes over basic lighting, posing, composition, will help improve.

I saw The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby mentioned here, and bought it from Amazon through this forum. It covers little tricks of the trade, and each topic is 1-2 pages.

Jim Zuckerman has a book called "Perfect Exposure" that's decent. He shoot film but really the topic of exposure isn't specific to film or digital; in the case of SLR's the mechanics are pretty much the same except that you can more easily change ISO with digital.

Bryan Peterson has a book called "Understanding Exposure" but I found it a bit too remedial, spending too much time explaining the basics of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO with not enough in-depth info on actually metering scenes and determining exposure.

Finally there's a book called "The Confused Photographer's Guide to On-Camera Spotmetering" that you may find useful. The book is written at about a 5-th grade level which is pretty annoying, but it does explain the concept of spot-metering. I think there may be a newer version of this one out now called "The Confused Photographer's Guide to Photographic Exposure and the Simplified Zone System" that's a little more general than just spot metering and may be worth a look.
