I got home last night to find a FedEx envelope on my door step. Expecting a document to arrive I rush inside, pet the dog, then open the package.

The document inside was an income statement for a company that wasn't mine and of course I realize something is askew.

Then I look at the address on the envelope and low and behold this one isn't for me, it's for a neighbor on another street that has the same street number.

Of course I take it to him and apologize for opening it and he's all ok with that since, as he laughs, he's had the same experience.

I don't get exorcized about late delivery or the numerous "3rd attempt" lies because I get lots of my deliveries free because it didn't come in the time I paid for....

Here's what I have a beef with, the tracking system at UPS. I ordered an item just recently and know that it was picked up by UPS by talking with the retailer. 2 days later, the package still shows it has only been either billed or picked up, no tracking on where the stinking thing is or expected delivery date. I know from experience that it will all get updated just about an hour before they try to deliver it, so I have no clue when to be there.

And yes, the ring the bell and run technique is not my favorite either, especially when I have expensive stuff that they just leave out in plain view for all my neighborhood to see.

At least the USPS tells you where your stuff is if you have it tracked, and they take it back to the shop if you don't open your door, even if it's a fake knock and just a note in the mailbox to come get the thing. Better that over my neighbor having a fun time selling my stuff on eBay.... ;)

The only one I like is FedEx, and that's mainly because our neighbor is our FedEx man. So he always gets our stuff to us. Even if we aren't home. When my hubby bought new wheels a few years ago, the guy came to deliver them and we weren't home. So he left us a note, and put them in his garage for us.

Sore subject for me as well.

I buy stuff from DELL ( a different rant entirely ), and they routinely would ship stuff to my house via DHL. No problem with DHL except they would leave some very expensive stuff at my door when no one was home. No signature required. I never lost anything, but always wondered how many folks were out there following the truck around and "finding" packages.

I just ordered a laptop from DELL. The delivery time was very quick, and it came via UPS when I wasn't home. I left a note at the door that they had permission to leave the package inside. The driver left a very legible slip that explained the package required signature and ID. I called UPS and requested the item be ready for me at the local distribution center. They made it clear that whoever came to pick up the package had to have proof that they lived at the address on the package !! This is new.

Now, we'll see tonight if the package has really been taken off the truck and waiting for me.

At least they put it at your door. I had FedEx leave a package with a motherboard in it leaning up against my mailbox on my county road. It was like a big sign STEAL ME!

Now the USPS site claims they attempted a second delivery today at 12:40 PM and left another notice. If I can find where they did this, I can probably find all the lost mail and maybe even Judge Crater and Jimmy Hoffa.

I ordered a monitor for my neighbor who doesn't buy on the web, and FedEx delivered it two blocks away, even though the address label was correct. It was a signature required delivery, but they didn't even try to hide it from view when they left it on the wrong front porch. They could have given a damn when I told them it was mis-delivered.

Situation resolved - 01-05-2007, 10:46 AM

Somehow B&H had the address wrong on my mailing label, they had substituted an 8 for a 9 in the address. This sent it to a different carrier, and there had indeed been two delivery attempts. I called B&H and they stated that their labels are computer generated from their file information (invoice had the correct address) and asked that I send them the address label. I have my camera strap and I guess the USPS is innocent of all charges.

Innocent is not a word I feel comfortable using in the same sentence as USPS>

But, I will let UPS off the hook this time. I called and requested my laptop be left at the dist. ctr. so I could pick it up. They called back in an hour and said I could get it between 7:30 and 8pm last nite. It wasn't there when I arrived, but it did get taken off the truck and given to me before they closed at 8pm.

There's a first time for eveything, and I hope this means they are trying to improve their service.

I am using the new laptop for this posting..,,;

As someone else mentioned, with the volume they move, all of the carriers do a pretty good job overall.

I have used everyone of the firms listed...and I guess in the end, it comes down to one thing: the individual delivering the package.

I know each of my carriers person by name and I can't complain about any of them. In fact, the UPS guy goes out of his way to make sure my deliveries (no matter the level of service) are at my door everyday, by 10:00am.

DHL...I love that lady to death. She is here on time everytime and NEVER leaves a package. Just a note that she will be around with it again.

Of course, when one of them are out on vacation or sick, well, not as prompt or dependable.

Just an update to my UPS rant, I was right. I looked at UPS tracking this morning and mysteriously all the tracking info showed up and it was on the truck to be delivered today. Would hav been nice to know yesterday, but luckily I was going to be home. And yes, when they delivered, I go a doorbell ring and before I could get down to the door I heard the truck zooming off, the package sitting on my porch in plain sight of everyone.
