Photo Locales in Sante Fe, Nm ?? - 01-04-2007, 01:08 PM

I'll be in Sante Fe next week while my wife is attending a legal conference .....

Any suggestions on what to see/photograph while I'm there ? I realize maybe not the ideal time of year, but it's what I have.

Planning on going out into countryside to get some snow/landscape shots.

Thanks for any inputs.

For me the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum would have to be the must see.

Should be some interesting things to shoot around the Plaza and the homes and Galleys on Upper Canyon road.

Here's a rather nice cultural map of Santa Fe.

They've had some good snow, so opportunity abounds.

The square is nice, and usually decorated - plenty of ops for candeleria shots.

There's an old train depot on the edge of DT that's photogenic.

The surrounding countryside is nice.

Take a ski lift up one of the nearby mountains for some neat high landscapes.

If you have a car, consider a drive to nearby TAOS for some site seeing and photography.

Check for area Native Amer dances/events. There's a few nearby pueblos.

I haven't been there in 10 years, but when I was there there was a nice statue garden in Taos, also a cool flea market somewhere in Santa Fe. There is a Buddhist Temple somewhere, and, oh yeah, a spiral staircase built with no support in the old, old, old church in the plaza.

You will not be short of photographic opportunities in the area, you will only be limited by your own ability to manuever around in the snow (*they have had heavy snows in the lower elevations the past 10 days). So be sure to take a polarizer for your primarily used lenses-snow glare is tough to shoot- and some layers to keep warm and to keep a battery nice and warm since as they get cold there performance levels drop and go out and have fun.

Sandia is nice - I used to mountain bike it many summers - had a few good spills there. But if you are already in SF, there are plenty of mountains in that area that are just as nice.

Although tramming to the top of Sandia is nice and the whole city of ABQ is layed out below you like jewels lights at night.

Also there are some great state parks with adobe/pueblo ruins nearby to SF (is it Banderas? or one of the others).

Thanks everybody ! Everything I've tried to research indicates that there are plenty of opportunities, which I'm certain I'll only be able to scratch the surface in the short time I'll be there. Certainly will try to check out as much as I can, and will post a few of my favs when I get back to Tx.

Thanks.
Randy
