Cedar Hell or Why January Sucks... - 01-06-2007, 09:33 AM

I love living in Austin for so many reasons that I don't ever want to live anywhere else.

But one thing gets me thinking about it... Cedar Fever.

It hit me two nights ago for the first time this season, and hit me hard. My eyes have been burning and my nose running and stuffy at the same time since then with horrible sinus pressure.

My brother suffered from the same fate while he lived here for 6 years. He moved to Syracuse, New York two years ago and has had no allergies whatsoever. I, however, do not want to leave Austin, much less Texas.

I know it's only for a month (or two) but it sure is hell. Just ranting. Thanks for listening... or reading as the case may be.

ps I think I should buy stock in Kleenex

I hear you. I almost didn't move to Texas, because of my allergies. I knew it was going to be a real problem...and it has been. I've even had to call in sick at work a few times because of them. For years, I lived on the coast of Florida, and never had any problems. As much as I like Texas, I may just have to leave when I retire (10 years). It's hard to see myself suffering through those "golden years" with allergies.

When I first came to Ft. Worth in 1959, nothing in the air bothered me in any manner. But as I have gotten older, and the air has gotten Much Dirtier, something is sure giving me fits now. And it is something here! When I go away for a few days, the problems goes away too.

I have lived in the cen-Tex area for most of the last 20 years. It wasn't until last year that I had my first taste of Cedar Fever. I guess the pollen eventually wears your system down until you have allergies. Yesterday afternoon I was hit again. I sure hope the rain we're supposed to get tonight clears it up quickly.

If it rains. When it does, the molds go up and my wife suffers.

I too suffer with the cedar.... this is what I do....

Every morning I eat three crackers with TEXAS honey on them... has to be honey made from this area... I think it helps build up some immunity to the cedar.

Like I said... I don't know if it works but it really seems too. My husband has been doing it too and he also thinks it works.

I tried the honey... didn't work for me.

Thank God for this rain. Hopefully I'll start feelling better soon.

I don't know of anything that you could take which would treat ALL of your allergy symptoms, but Patanol works wonders for the eyes. It's an occular allergy eye drop that's available only by prescription.

Miss living in Austin...DON'T miss cedar fever - 01-14-2007, 12:04 AM

I'm sorry you're feeling so badly!! I lived in Austin for 12 years and LOVE, LOVE the city, but eventually, I too, succumbed to cedar fever. I was miserable the entire month of January every year...usually ended up with a respiratory infection on top of it all.
Claritin-D worked for me...
