Thieves really bite! - 01-08-2007, 08:47 PM

Today I ran into Best Buy at Richmond and 610 for check prices on CF. Came out and reached to the back seat to put something in my computer bag and it wasn't there. Jumped out of the truck and noticed my lock had been popped in. Luckily my camera gear wasn't there, but pics since Dec 22 are gone as well as worked realted stuff. Other bad thing is it was a 5 week old pc.

My intention is not to chastise or humiliate, but you're asking for your car to be burglarized if you leave stuff in your vehicle. I work that part of town and - AAMOF - I've taken a number of BMV reports from that very lot. Every time, the complainant says they left their bag/phone/computer/etc on the seat/floorboard. The Uptown/Galleria area is absolutely horrible for BMVs. Its sad that it has to be that way, but it is.

I had Limo Tint put on all 3 of the backseat windows on my car and use dark gray towels and a gray fleece blanket to keep things covered with. This makes it really difficult to see what's back there. And, it just looks like a heap of clutter back there if you look hard enough to see through the tint.
Not foolproof by any means, but it helps.

The HPD officer said they do a BMV every day in the BB parking lot. I have near blacked out windows on my excursion and what the LEO showed me is that when you go to the window opposite the sunny side you can see through. I had a homeland security duffle bag in site and my computer bag was under the seat. The duffle was the lure apparently. A guy called me last night from I45 and Main and said my duffle bag was in his trash can at home, said this has happened a few times. No sign of the computer bag or passport.

I also think it sucks that BB's security cameras in the parking lot only cover their doors in the event of a robbery and no exposure for customer in the lot. I plan on bringing this to their attention, not that it will matter.

You'd think with one a day at BB they would do something. I live in Spring and hardly ever get over that way and had no clue it was so bad.

The LEO told me that fitness clubs are being slaughtered cause people park, put all their stuff in the trunk then go in for a workout.

It's a shame.

At the Pappadeaux's on Westheimer @ Greenridge (west of Fountainview), there were a rash of BMVs where the complainants' things were locked in the trunk, but were stolen anyway. No forced entry. Near as I could figure was the turds had a frequency grabber and when the complainants armed their alarm, they gave the bad guys the freq to lock and unlock.

That being said, I'm a huge hypocrite. I leave all my gear in the truck, as there's way too much for me to tote all of it to and fro. Laptop, tactical shotgun, riot gear, fluffy pillow...

Thieves got my camera and gear a few weeks ago. People are always looking for oppurtunity. I'll try not to give it to them next time around. It can get tough to have to tote all your belongings in with you when you're just running into the store for a few minutes. I too have an SUV and there is no trunk. You can only get so much under the seats!

Sorry for your loss.

Within the next few days I'll have a steel box bolted in the back of my Excursion that will fit my PC bag, cam bag(s) and kids DVD and gameboy stuff. If I'm really proud how it looks I might post some pics.

We purchased a 2005 Cherokee last year which has the cover in the back that you can pull and it hides everything so no one can see. very handy for concealment.

Jay....a cover in the back doesn't help much if the perps. SEE you put something back there when you're out shopping.

Some of these low-lifes do stake out parking lots.

Stores are afraid of getting sued and some places wont even pursue shoplifters out the door. I wonder if they would even risk using their cameras to help you.

Very true. Companies don't want to be responsible/liable for your cars in their parking lot. Many times their camera systems are more show than go so they don't want a customer thinking they can rely on the footage to help crack their case.

My companies does some work with these systems and a lot of times, the cameras aren't even hooked up, or aren't recording!
