Jimmy Crack Corn (cingular) - 01-08-2007, 10:37 PM

I was just sitting here and one of the Cingular commercials ran by for the second time (watching the OSU vs Fl St game) and realized that they cut him off before he starts singing 'Jimmy Crack Corn'.... which is what really 'makes' that commercial.

I knew the history of the song but thought to myself, now why would someone complain about this?

Well... here it is: http://cbs13.com/national/local_story_352232207.html

Am I out of touch / ignorant / insensitive, or aren't we getting a little 'too sensitive' as a society?

We have multiple episodes of CSI on weekly, which shows far more gore than many "R" rated movies that I saw when growing up. But we get a split second glimpse of a woman's breast during the superbowl and everyone goes apesh*t. I guess it's alright to show a breast on TV.... just as long as it's dismembered.

Ok... I'm done ranting... the soapbox is yours...

I'm still confused on why there would be a complaint against that commercial. I always catch myself saying it out loud every time haha.

Speaking of CSI and the gore, I get such a kick out of when they are showing the corpses and they are visibly breathing. Sometimes they also show a close-up of their neck and you can see their pulse beating away.

I'm a huge fan of all the CSIs, but sometimes I could do without all the inside-out action.

It's not you, it's the tail wagging the dog. Some people can't accept the fact that a slave or two might have had a loving relationship with their master. I need to stop or i might cross the political line here.

Yeah, I hadn't thought about it like that, why is it that every 'social' issue has to be a 'political' one.

I guess I've hit on a sensitive subject anyway. If I'm being insensitive then I expect to be told so (or I wouldn't have asked). In no way do I assume to know what the world looks like through other's eyes.

Actually, it's okay to show topless women as long as they're not American or European. Always seemed like an odd standard to me.

Prejudice is real. It doesn't need to be watered down and made less important by people mislabelling things for political gain or by sheer stupidity. Just because someone is offended doesn't make something offensive. It just may mean that the offended person is ignorant of the reality or trying to make political hay.

or stupid.

Sorry but I am on the other side of this argument. If people are offended then I see nothing wrong with them expressing their opinion. If cingular wants to remove part of their ad then no skin off my back. I personally had no clue that is what the song meant.

Well I am offended that they removed it from their ad. Guess that means they should put it back in? Oh wait... YOU CAN"T PLEASE EVERYONE! There is always going to be one person offended by something they claim is racist/ stereotyping/ whatever and it doesn't matter what color they are. Red, yellow, black, white, purple, green. And those people know that all they have to do is complain and any company will jump quickly. All I know is that Jimmy did crack corn and I really don't care.
