do I want to sell my sigma 12-24 to get a canon 17-40?
i do, but i don't.
and since there may be a chance that we're going to be moving to denver, i'm now in two minds if i want to sell it.
when i'm shooting horses i'm finding the darn thing too wide, and 90% it just sits in my bag. but if we move, we'll actually have some landscape so it might get a little more use...

i have the 17-40 and i love the thing. it gets 10 times the use that my sigma 15 does. i am using a 1d so it is a little wider than those with 1.6 sensors. i find it to be super sharp, and if you want to shoot landscapes, you can always just shoot a few vertical pictures in a row and stitch them together.
so i give my vote for the 17-40.

Gotta admit, I've fallen for my 12-24 Sigma.
You'll definitely use it much more regularly in the mountains.
Disclaimer: I use my 24-70L as my "standard hiking lens".
Best wishes,
Steve

help me out here!!! | I borrowed Gardener's 12-24 (thanks Steve) for my trip out West. I loved that lense! It's amazing how quickly you can become used to a focal length. At first that lense seemed suuuuuuper wide. It wasn't but a couple days later I was bumping up against 12mm, trying to twist it wider. I haven't shot with the 17-40 yet, but this decision is one I'm going to be making in the relatively near future myself. Good luck!

You're quite welcome Robert. Told ya you'd like it...
I have both the 17-40 Canon and the 12-24 Sigma and while that first 5mm doesn't sound like much, it really shines when you're out in the open and want some "wide" to take home with you. I usually carry the 17-40 nearly everywhere my camera goes and I rarely use the 12-24 except on vacations to here and there but it works so well that I'll probably keep it forever and keep dragging it out just for trips...
As to choices, if the lens is already paid for, you're satisfied with it, and you still use it occasionally, why sell it? The 17-40 isn't an unreasonable cost bought new or used and in a fashion, the two will compliment each other on the wide side... On the other hand, if you need to sell the 12-24 just to pay for the 17-40 then do so as it's not like you won't be able to buy another 12-24 Sigma at some point in the future if it's needed for some special purpose. What kind of camera are you using the Sigma 12-24 on?
Just curious because I have a Sigma 15-30 (i think that is the one) and got major barrel rings when I used it on the 1DsMII (that is down until I can get $ for repairs) and get some in the corners on my 20D. | | | |

Here's a shot with that lens at 12mm:

I have the Nikon version of the Sigma 12-24, and love it too. I think you'd miss that extra 5mm. Take some shots at 12mm vs. 17mm, and you'll see a pretty big diference unless you're shooting full frame. Even then, 5mm at the low end is a lot to lose.
Have no experience with the 17-40, but I'm sure it's a fine lens. I just have some lenses that I sold to "upgrade", and missed them later.

I'm using my 12-24 on a 20D Canon. The tiny bit of distortion doesn't bother me at all so I've never worried about trying to "fix" it in post.
I believe pippen is also using a 20D.

I've used the 12-24 on 30D, 10D, and..... 7E (did someone say 'film'?). One of the reasons why I went with the Sigma version was because it isn't limited to smaller sensors. Woot! Full Frame!
