anyone know of a good one for a windows machine? Need to set one up on a computer i'll have no remote access to after I leave. Looking for one that can send out the report file to me via email, ftp or whatever. I know I could install VNC to remote into the machine (windows 98 of all things) but that will be my final measure. it also needs to be free! heh

I don't have any suggestions other than Google. Looks like there are programs that do what you want, I just have no idea how good/reliable they are.

Personally, I would assume that any such software on a machine that I have no direct access to will become compromised in short order. And assuming the user(s) don't know that this is on there, they could inadvertently discover/disable it during routine virus/trojan/root-kit scans.

Ed,

My wife and I have 3 sons and we can't always watch where they visit on the internet, despite keeping their computer in the kitchen. However, there is one version of Norton's firewall that let's the administrator block a computer from visiting sites with inappropriate content and also adding or subtracting from Norton's list of sites. We have found that it sometime accidently blocks sites that my wife and I would normally allow them to visit and we can modify the filters to allow it. The advantage is that we can prevent them from visiting a site rather than finding out about it after the fact.

This is just a suggestion.

David

HERE you go...download.com always has user ratings for various software. I couldn't tell you about any of these myself though.

Depending on the computer literacy of the 'teen' in question. Modify the hosts file for all the offending sites. Then make the hosts file read only and hidden. If they find and fix that, nothing you're going to put on the system will help, unless you create a self loading dll file called from the registry during boot up that checks for modification/deletion of the hosts file and puts it back.

I had to find and remove one such dll file after my daughter ended up on sites she shouldn't have. Until I found that dll file,(took a couple of hours to trace it) I couldn't get rid of the way it took over IE. You could remove all the offending IE stuff and continue to work without it bothering you. First time you rebooted the system it was all back.

Hit ctrl+h in Internet Explorer. You can view sites visited by Today, Yesterday, Last Week, etc. They stay there until te history has been cleared. If that is the reason you are needing the software. If you are needing it to get the users password for a site like Myspace, then it won't help. You ca block sites though....

I guarantee that your kids know about this and erase the tracks that they don't want you to see.

You can first ask them about their habits then (knowing that they're lying) unplug the computer and take the power cord with you.

Or do like my mom did when my brother and I weren't doing our chores and, instead of just unplugging the Atari 2600 from the wall, also smashing it on the floor thereby getting the attention you deserve and also having to pay $27 for a part that is only sold from the factory.

edit: that was one of the longest waits of my life...but we did get our chores done after that!

Nah, i found the porn pretty easy in the recycle bin. :) If I have it my way, i'm installing Gentoo with Gnome and i'll have sshd running on it so I can access the box myself.

I looked at download.com before I posted. I didn't find any that were free and did what I wanted to.
