Camera+Subs=? - 01-15-2007, 10:28 AM

I usually like to keep my camera and accessories in the truck/rear hatch of my Mazda3 just so its out of sight from potential thieves. I have been thinking though that this might be causing more harm though. I have a forward facing single 12in. sub in the back of my car as well. Will having my camera near the sub cause any problems? I know having the sub on and hitting would cause a lot of vibrations so I have a cut off for the power. I'm mostly worried about the large magnet that is inside the sub. Can powerful magnetic fields ruin my camera or flash cards that are in my bag? My camera sits about 24in. away from the magnet. Any information to this would be greatly appreciated.

Good question. I believe flash memory needs an electric charge to change its state, a magnetic field should be okay. So, try it out with an old flash card and let us know.

I would be more concerned with vibration and thieves.

large magnetic fields can interfere with cameras, but I don't think the effect is permanent. I got too close to an extremely large (permanent) magnet with my digital once and the LCD went bonkers for a bit.

Comparing the size and power of the magnets between what I had and a sub, I would say that 24" is far enough away to be of no issue.

FWIW, the truck of a sedan is the best place to keep camera gear, not only is it out of sight but UV will not heat up the trunk like it does the passenger compartment (glass vs no glass). pickups, minivans and wagons don't have this advantage.

Yea see my Mazda3 is a hatch but the rear has a hard cover that goes over the rear so it looks like the top of a sedan truck. The cover is a mix of plastic and fiber resin. It came with the car and keeps things back there out of sight. Along with tint I'm not to worried about thieves. I guess I'll get my old flash car and shoot some pointless pictures on it and see what happens.

I'd be more worried about the low frequency vibration loosening things up. Could be rather inconvenient to have to disassemble a lens to tighten a screw. Especially with Murphy's Law dictating it will be the first screw that was installed in the lens.

Just for thought, low frequency waves are pretty long. So, keep your camera close to the sub.
