Windows backup utilities are not the best for this, so it's best to get a 3rd party application from a backup vendor. Here is a FANTASTIC and free (even for business use) application I use for all of my backup needs. I did give him a few $ over PayPal because the software is that good. Give it a try, and send him a few $ if it works out well for you!

FYI, this is not designed for backing up open (in use) files on the server. If you need to back up those types of files you will either need to temporarily pause or stop the application using them through a script, or purchase a more enterprise level backup software such as Veritas Backup.

Are you looking to clone the entire machine, or just a folder? Are there application software files which might be in use?

There are many file sync utilities that work well for Windows.

Can you give some more detail?

no just a few folders that we have data in, so in case of an emergency then all users could just log in under a diff profile that has mapped drives to the backup machine, does that make sense ?
thanks

I forgot to ask one more question... Workgroup style server or Active Directory (with 2003 server it's most likely AD). Is there another server in the network to provide AD controller support? That may be more if a sticking point, since if the one and only server goes down, you may have a credentials issue. I think I know what you're trying to do and as far as the data replication goes, it should be very straight forward. In fact you can do it with a scheduled command from the XP backup machine (as long as it stays up). Look into the task scheduler and write a simple cmd file using xcopy.

As far as third party applications go, I use ChronoSync to keep my PowerBook and Mac Pro but sadly it's a Mac only application. What about the Microsoft SyncToy? http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...o/synctoy.mspx

Have fun!

If you are just doing a simple copy from one machine to another, you could even just create a .CMD file and have it run as a scheduled task.

This way there is no restore needed. Also, you may want to see if Sync Toy works on 2003, I used it on my old XP machine. Very robust and free. It can also be set on a schedule.
